You will joint the Legal Service, reporting to the Director-General, that is charged with the protection of the Organization in all legal aspects and with ensuring that its activities and decisions comply with the applicable legal framework.


As a Legal Adviser in the CERN Legal Service, you will perform your duties under the supervision of the Head of the Legal Service's Operational Section.

Working with colleagues in CERN's EU Support Group and scientists and engineers across the Organization's departments, you will:

  • draft, review and follow up grant applications, consortium agreements and similar instruments related to EU R&D framework programmes;
  • in so doing, take into account CERN's particular legal status as an Intergovernmental Organisation, liaise with colleagues in HR to ensure compliance with CERN's staff rules and regulations, and with the Knowledge Transfer Group on IP policies; and
  • represent the Organization in discussions with legal experts at the EU Commission, with grant applicants as well as consortium members.


Master's degree in the field of private law, or equivalent; knowledge of international institutional law would be an advantage.

Experience and competencies

The experience required for this post is:

  • Demonstrated professional experience in practising contract and IP law.
  • Involvement in the establishment of collaborations, acquired in an intergovernmental organization, governmental or industry environment, or in private practice.
  • In addition, it will be an advantage if you have experience working with EU or similar grant programmes.

The technical competencies required for this post are:

  • Knowledge of Intellectual property law.
  • Legal drafting (in english).
  • Knowledge of contract law. 

In addition, the preferred candidate will offer:

  • Knowledge of EU or other grant programmes.
  • Knowledge of international administrative law.

The behavioural competencies required for this post are:

  • Communicating effectively: expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner; keeping to the point; utilising effective negotiation techniques to achieve long-term results acceptable to all parties involved.

The language competencies required are:

  • Excellent spoken and written English.
  • A willingness to acquire a working knowledge of French.
