The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering provides competence and technological solutions within the areas of civil and transportation engineering, structural engineering, water and wastewater engineering, and hydraulic engineering. Students and researchers graduating from our programs provide our partners with sustainable and competitive expertise, for application in both the public and private sectors.

This PhD position is funded through a research program at the Norwegian Public Road Administration that, in part, includes study and evaluation of current basic geometric road design parameters to determine which parameters are suitable for use today and in the future. The objective is to develop a knowledge-base in order to obtain a set of robust alternatives within the design of new roads and upgrade of existing roads. This PhD project will focus on the median strip (or central reservation) which separates opposing lanes of traffic on divided roadways. This includes determining requirements for various median treatments, such as barriers and markings, with respect to safety and traffic volumes, and how they will be designed within the interests of sight distance, maintenance, and cost.

Applicants for the PhD position should have a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline. Strong credentials are required, and previous knowledge of roadway design and/or transport safety is desired. Successful applicants should be motivated and ambitious. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written are important, and the applicant must speak and write English with a high level of proficiency.

The appointment has a duration of 3 years with the possibility of 1 year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the department.

PhD candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at NOK 432,300 per year before tax. There will be a 2% deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.

The goal of the announced position is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants are obliged to engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicant’s plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.
