Human and Evolutionary Biology
Position Description
The Department of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University is seeking a Preceptor to organize and supervise laboratories for the undergraduate course, LS 2: Evolutionary Anatomy and Physiology (Fall semester), and for a second lab based class in the Spring semester in such as HEB 1210, Research in Comparative Biomechanics (Spring semester).
Responsibilities:
Recruits, trains, and supervises TAs and TFs. Conducts demonstration laboratories for TAs and TFs. Maintains relationship with the Bok Center to provide training for TAs and TFs. Supervises student laboratory section sessions and reviews progress. Meets with students and TAs and TFs. Reviews grading issues not resolved by TAs and TFs. Acts as liaison between the instructional staff and laboratory support group. Reviews lab equipment needs and oversees purchasing and maintenance of core laboratory support components, ensuring maintentance of state-of-art teaching laboratory equipment.
Develops course website. Prepares laboratory manuals and other handouts. Works with faculty to design and implement new teaching laboratories. Assists in the assessment of labs and course.
Basic Qualifications
Ph.D. in Biological Sciences or Anthropology; leadership skills to assist in training teaching fellows and to manage relationships with up to 150 undergraduates. Strong commitment and background in undergraduate science education. Experience working with individual undergraduates and with bench science research. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills required, as well as demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
Additional Qualifications
Strong background in vertebrate physiology and morphology. Knowledge of instrumentation for physiological measurements and analysis of data required, and previous experience with physiological measurements on living vertebrates strongly preferred.
Special Instructions
The position is a twelve-month appointment beginning July 1, 2017 through June 30, 2018, with possibility of renewal up to eight years.
