Allston Burr Assistant Dean
Allston Burr Assistant
Dean School Faculty of Arts and Sciences
Office of Student Life Harvard College
Dudley House enthusiastically serves a community of undergraduates, as well as students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Dudley House undergraduates include residents of the Dudley Co-op, students living off-campus, and Visiting Undergraduate students. This eclectic mix of members is one of the particular pleasures of Dudley.
The Dudley Co-op, founded in 1958 as an alternative to other on-campus housing, has a long and vibrant tradition as a progressive, participatory community. Housed in two Victorian homes located between Harvard and Porter squares, the Dudley co-op offers a welcome counterpoint to traditional Harvard living for many students. The off campus students include students who have chosen to live off campus for a variety of reasons and choose to affiliate with Dudley House. The Visiting Undergraduate are students from other colleges and universities around the world who come to study at Harvard for one semester, or an entire school year.

Office of Student Life, Harvard College
Harvard College is a residential college comprising four areas of the freshman Yard, 12 upperclass Houses, and Dudley House, which ministers to undergraduates in the Dudley Co-op, Visiting Undergraduates, and to off-campus students. Each of the upperclass Houses employs an Allston Burr Assistant Dean, who serves as the dean of students under the direction of the Faculty Deans and the Dean of Harvard College. The Assistant Dean is responsible for the academic progress and personal welfare of the undergraduate students affiliated with the House. The Assistant Dean represents students at the Administrative Board; works with departments on academic issues affecting individual students; and teaches one course per semester in an FAS department. Like the Faculty Deans, the Assistant Dean provides friendly guidance and support over meals, participation in House-sponsored activities, office hours, and casual contact.
The Allston Burr Assistant Dean’s primary responsibility is to foster the academic progress and personal welfare of the undergraduates in one Harvard House. The Assistant Dean of Dudley House is responsible for approximately 100 undergraduate students, including 60-75 Visiting Undergraduate Students.
The Assistant Dean works closely with Faculty Deans, the Dean of Students, the Secretary of the Administrative Board, the House Staff, and the Advising Programs Office. The Assistant Dean is a member of the Administrative Board of Harvard College, which meets weekly during term time to consider undergraduate petitions for exceptions to College rules, as well as unsatisfactory academic records and matters of College discipline. The Assistant Dean plays a critical role in both individual and community crisis management and in House disciplinary incidents.
This is a 12-month academic appointment with administrative responsibilities and is accompanied by a second appointment within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences as a Lecturer. The Assistant Dean advises individual students on issues ranging from academic, interpersonal, and community concerns, to advice on fellowship and professional opportunities. Appointments are for an initial term of five-years with the first year of the appointment considered probationary.
Allston Burr Assistant Deans are appointed by, and report to, the Faculty Deans and the Dean of Harvard College or the Dean’s delegate.
Doctorate required. Must be qualified to teach as a Lecturer in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
Ability to advise and counsel undergraduate students about academic opportunities and support resources, interest and experience in academic administration and student life, and excellent verbal and written communication skills are required. Preference will be given to candidates who have taught undergraduates and have worked in a residential environment with holistic advising responsibilities. Applicants should also be familiar with residential crisis management and disciplinary responsibilities. Successful candidates in the past have brought a variety of life and work experiences to the position.
Allston Burr Assistant Dean appointments in the Houses begin July 1, 2017. Review of applications will begin on March 1, 2017. Please include a CV and cover letter with your application. Materials related to teaching, including but not limited to a teaching statement and sample syllabi, may be requested at a later date.
