Postdoctoral Fellow in Environmental Science

Ref. No. SU FV-0362-17

at the Department of Environmental Science and Analytical Chemistry. Closing date: 31 March 2017.

The Department of Environmental Science and Analytical Chemistry (ACES) at Stockholms University employs about 220 employees: researches, postdoctoral fellows, PhD students and technical/administrative support staff.

Project description

Life-saving protection is needed in healthcare clothing to shield against biological fluids that can transmit diseases in hospitals. Currently, fluorinated polymers are the only known technology that can provide both oil and water repellency, but these fluorinated polymeric products can release highly fluorinated substances known to be hazardous to the environment and humans. Due to their unsustainability, highly fluorinated substances are being phased-out from all non-essential uses in Swedish society and are a high priority for the Swedish government and regulators. In this project, we will identify products used in the Swedish health care system which contain highly fluorinated substances using a combination of product registries and analytical tools. We will then test various commercially available alternative products to determine if they can offer the necessary life-saving protection while at the same time be nonhazardous to the environment and humans. The project (Substitution in Practice of Prioritized Fluorinated Chemicals to Eliminate Sources from Healthcare – SUPFES-Health) is funded by Stockholm County Council.

Main responsibilities

The successful candidate would work within a team focusing on this research topic comprising several senior scientists and one PhD student. Postdoctoral Fellow will also be a member of a research group in the Contaminant Chemistry Unit led by Ian Cousins. The project builds on an ongoing research project (SUPFES – Substitution in Practice of Prioritized Fluorinated Chemicals to Eliminate Diffuse Sources) comprising a unique consortium of universities, research institutes, industry and other stakeholders with expertise in materials, processes and products, analytical chemistry, toxicology and socioeconomics. The postdoctoral fellow will plan and conduct both experimental and theoretical research.
