Professor or Associate Professor in Organic Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Natural Sciences, at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), announces an open position as Professor or associate Professor within the field of organic chemistry, specifically directed to synthesis of organic electronic materials. We seek applicants that demonstrate research competence and experience at a high international level within organic chemistry, who can strengthen current research activities in organic chemistry for energy applications. The applicant should also demonstrate experience of and visions for building an internationally recognized research group with accompanying educational activities.
About the department
The current research areas of the Department for Chemistry include organic chemistry, theoretical chemistry, energy technology, medicinal technology, environmental and analytical chemistry and marine chemistry. The department teaches organic chemistry, analytical and environmental chemistry and applied theoretical chemistry.
The department has at present 13 professors, 8 associate professors, 3 adjunct professors, 10 postdoctoral researchers and 18 research fellows.

The Department of Chemistry aims to maintain a wide base of competence within organic chemistry including methods in organic synthesis. The announced position is directed to develop recently initiated research efforts within synthesis of organic electronic materials, with applications in solar cells, light emitting diodes (OLEDs), and field-effect transistors (OFETs). It is expected that the candidate takes a leading position within organic electronic materials at the department of chemistry. A long-term strategic goal of the department is to establish an internationally highly recognized research environment in this field. The research area of the announced position will complement and strengthen ongoing activities at the department and at the faculty, having several research groups in energy technology.
The Professor/Associate Professor is to be jointly responsible for matters regarding the discipline together with other academic staff in the Department and is expected to contribute to teaching activities in the relevant curriculum and assist in further developing the teaching programme, including continuing education. The Professor/Associate Professor will have specific responsibility for teaching courses in organic chemistry. In addition to his/her own specialty, the candidate should be able to lecture basic organic chemistry and physical organic chemistry. Furthermore, he/she is expected to supervise master students, research fellows and doctoral candidates in his/her discipline and to partake in the departmental administrative work. It is also expected that the candidate will contribute to the further development of national and international collaboration.
We are seeking candidates with strong potential for leadership in research and education, and commitment to high quality and ground-breaking research. Applicants should show potential to develop a strong program of externally funded research and scholarships, both through national and European sources. The preferred candidate is expected to strengthen the existing research activity at NTNU within organic chemistry and the effort to bring selected research activities to the international forefront.
Candidates should hold a PhD in organic chemistry and document strong research activities in organic synthesis with focus on organic electronic materials. Extensive teaching experience in organic chemistry is also required.
Significant emphasis will be placed on teaching and communication skills. Evaluation of the applicants will be based on documented materials, including pedagogical training, presentation of academic work, previous experience from supervision and teaching of master level and PhD candidates, as well as other related skills. Quality and scope will be evaluated.
Candidates for the position must have established excellent research and publication track record in the field of competence. He/She should demonstrate extensive teaching and supervision experience, established international scientific collaborations, administrative experience, and have a proven ability to attract external funding. Candidates for an Associate Professor position must as a minimum have two years of experience after the PhD degree, demonstrate strong scientific development and international experience as well as relevant teaching and supervision experience. Evaluation of candidates for both hiring levels (Associate Professor and Professor) will be based on scientific accomplishments and future potential.
The Professor/Associate Professor is obliged to adhere to regulations that concern changes and developments within the relevant fields of research and teaching, and/or the organizational changes concerning activities at the University.
Academic staff that is unable to document formal pedagogical qualifications in university-level teaching is required to successfully complete a recognized course that gives a pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching within two years of taking up the appointment. Courses are available at the University.
Newly employed academic staff who do not speak or write a Scandinavian language are required to obtain knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within three years of taking up an appointment. This must be of a standard that is equivalent to Level three in the “Norwegian for Foreigners” courses provided by the Department of Linguistics, NTNU.
Terms of employment
The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.

The position as Professor/Associate Professor is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution.
