Tutor, Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Centre
The Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Centre at James Cook University ( JCU), have received funding from the Australian Government Department of the Prime, Minister and Cabinet.
The funding enables Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, studying at James Cook University, to receive tutorial assistance, through the Indigenous Student Success (Higher Education) Programme to begin on the 1st January, 2017.
The programme aims to improve academic outcomes for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students by providing supplementary tuition by qualified, suitable tutors. Tutors work with our Academic Skills Advisors to accelerate learning for Indigenous students and tuition is provided in addition to the usual teaching and learning of each JCU subject.
The Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Centre at James Cook University is responsible for coordinating tutorial assistance, for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander JCU students in Townsville, Cairns, Mackay, Mt Isa, Thursday Island and those studying externally around Australia.
All new tutors must complete the ‘Tutor Registration’ form, and submit the following:
Evidence of qualifications - a copy of academic record/transcript.
- JCU students provide unofficial academic record printed from ‘eStudent’.
- Certified copies of original, official documents required for non-JCU study
Evidence of relevant work experience – a current CV/Resume
The Academic Skills Advisor will match suitable tutors to students, both parties will then be sent Approval via email to commence tuition. Under no circumstances should tutors and students make arrangement for tuition which has not been approved in writing.

Tutor Duties include:
- Develop an understanding of your allocated student/s learning needs in relation to their specific subjects.
- Plan a Student Work Program, to meet your allocated student/s learning needs, which must be emailed back to
- your assigned Academic Skills Advisor (ASA) after the first tutoring session.
- Attend meetings with your assigned ASA and training and development sessions as requested.
- Provide advice to your allocated student/s on assignment writing, academic skills and research techniques.
- Maintain regular contact and student confidentiality with allocated student/s.
- Notify your assigned ASA and advise of any change of details or circumstances or if unable to tutor student/s. Notify
- your assigned ASA, if an allocated student is absent from arranged sessions on two consecutive occasions, without
- Complete relevant administration tasks including required documentation, reports and Student Work Program/s in a
- timely manner.
- Complete the weekly/fortnightly pay claim forms with both the student and tutor signatures, dated to confirm the
- tuition for the week/fortnight.
- Deliver the program of tuition to facilitate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students’ learning of the subject
- specific content.
- Comply with the expectations and guidelines outlined in the ITAS Tutor Orientation Booklet.
- Establish and maintain collaborative and respectful working relationships with staff and students, at the Aboriginal
- and Torres Strait Islander Centre.
SELECTION CRITERIA - Selection and appointments will be assessed against selection criteria.
- Education, training and/or relevant experience equivalent to the completion of a degree or significant progress
- towards the completion of a degree relevant to the field of study in which tuition will be provided.
- A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 5.0;
- Must be at least two academic years ahead of the student that you are tutoring.
- You must not be receiving ITAS tutoring in the course area you are applying to tutor in.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures, including
- an understanding of the issues affecting people in contemporary Australian society and the diversity of circumstances
- of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples;
- Demonstrated communication and negotiation skills to considerately and effectively work with Aboriginal and Torres
- Strait Islander peoples on matters relevant to the delivery of quality higher education to Aboriginal and Torres Strait
- Islander peoples.
- High level of skill and demonstrated ability to use various software packages, mainly Microsoft Office packages and
- information databases.
- Ability to work independently and effectively to facilitate the allocated students’ learning.
