A variety of posts have been created at UCLan’s Westlakes campus to form an interdisciplinary team who will be involved in high impact outcome-orientated research, teaching, publication and knowledge transfer engaging with collaborating organisations in public, private and social sectors and dissemination at regional, national and international levels.

These posts represent a unique opportunity to undertake a highly career-relevant job in a specific discipline in a wider, applied setting and be centrally involved in the design and implementation of the wider integrated research, dissemination and knowledge transfer programme as a member of one of the UKs largest universities. They have been created as part of a major investment by UCLan and the Samuel Lindow Foundation who are jointly developing a new initiative at the UCLan facility on Westlakes Science and technology Park near Whitehaven in West Cumbria.

Located in North West England, the West Cumbria area is a distinctive location with multinational high tech engineering and design companies and research facilities associated with the nuclear industry. Within this area of high landscape value there exists a rich heritage and social diversity and all of these issues have created significant issues in public policy and service design and delivery. UCLan’s connections with policy and practitioner organisations in all of these areas embed the researchers in powerful networks and give privileged access to original data and a publication programme including four seminars at Westminster in each year.

The Research Fellow posts are in areas chosen as relevant to West Cumbria and which provide the opportunity to develop impactful portable, scalable policy solutions. Alongside undertaking research and dissemination through a programme of publication and seminars locally, nationally and internationally, the post-holders will contribute and lead on the management of existing and future research/evaluation projects including the writing of research proposals/grant applications for external funding. They will also supervise and coordinate activities of research staff employed to work on research/evaluation projects.

Substantial experience of research in appropriate settings demonstrated by a record of involvement in and responsibility for research management and related activities on a number of research/evaluation based projects is essential. Experience should be reinforced by an awareness of current academic and policy debates associated with the subject areas. 
Experience of utilising qualitative and quantitative methodologies and a range of different research methods are essential as well as excellent organisation skills with a proven ability to prioritise and meet deadlines. A record of academic peer reviewed publications/research reports and experience of contributing to writing research grant proposals are also core requirements for these posts.

Educated to PhD in a relevant discipline to the posts, the successful applicants will possess excellent oral communication, academic writing and IT skills. A flexible and enthusiastic approach to work combined with an ability to work independently and as part of a team to achieve work targets are also essential skills for success in these posts.
