- Achieve at a world top 100 university
- Bring your expertise to deliver collaborative outcomes
- Work in an ultra-agile environment
If you're after a rewarding career, Monash University can help make it happen. With leading academics and world-class resources, combined with a ranking in the top 100 universities worldwide, we offer all you need to build a brighter future.
What the student task force has to offer
You will be working in an ultra-agile environment where we:
- believe in humans more than systems
- understand/probe problems more deeply to be better guided
- work to outcomes not specifications
- get to decide how we're going to solve each problem
- are totally self-sufficient to deliver integrated web solutions
- work directly with users on a daily basis
- use the latest cloud infrastructure (no devops)
- start all projects by releasing software within a few days
- release software to real users every couple of days
We work across all business units at the University so the work varies widely and you're always using your brain as well as your people skills. Sometimes that's in administration with staff, sometimes with students and lecturers. Sometimes our works extend to potential students and industry bodies.
Our user base is always very appreciative, we receive positive comments from users and sponsors at least once a week, often multiple times per week.
Culture and personality
Our team is very small (4 devs + 2 others) and it's important to us that you're excited about working directly with real users, often outside the building.
You'll need to be socially comfortable and able to make a point calmly, but also acknowledge when the team's view is not the same as yours and sometimes accept compromise. We believe in optimising the overall machine rather than just one part.
We often build something basic/functional and then refactor it a few days later. You will be the type of person who revels in this fact rather than being distracted by it.
What we're looking for
Our ideal candidate is relaxed, confident and happy to "get out of the building" to work with users (students, lecturers, staff) in their natural environment rather than test labs.
You will be organising users to take part in pilots as well as accessing and working with existing production users to improve the quality of applications pre-release and post-release.
Experience with web applications is a must-have. You'll need a firm grasp of the things that typically go wrong like hardware, operating systems, browsers, connectivity, proxy and caching issues. Your experience should also extend to assuring responsively designed web applications across desktop/laptop, mobile and tablet formats.
You'll be a natural breaker of web applications with a tendency to leave the "happy path" and find functional and user experience flaws that the team overlooked.
The validation role is more about learning from users and feeding the learning back into the next cycle of development, although functional an UX pre-assurance is also important.
Applicants will need to be comfortable leaving behind traditional bug tracking tools and associated meetings as these don't fit into our methodology.
This role is a full-time position; however, flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.
Your application must address the selection criteria. Please refer to "How to apply for Monash Jobs"
