Job Summary

Caltech is looking for a full-time, campus Elevator Technician.
Under minimum supervision, inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, calibrate, modify, and repair all conveyance and lifting equipment.
Perform skilled electrical, electronic, mechanical, and hydraulic work. All conveyances will be maintained in proper operating condition to meet the requirements of the health and safety code of the State of California and other governing codes, laws, and regulations.

Job Duties

• Perform planned and corrective maintenance on all conveyances (traction, hydraulic, and drum) and lifting equipment including, but not limited to, passenger elevators, freight elevators, sidewalk elevators, dumbwaiters, conveyors, hoists, and lifts of all types. Maintain the cleanliness and material condition of conveyance mechanical rooms and associated equipment.
• Respond to trouble calls dispatched from Service Desk, Campus Security, Central Utility Plant and Building occupants. Troubleshoot and repair all malfunctions.
• Perform upgrades and installations of new equipment on conveyances to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act and safety regulations.
• Perform and maintain up to date records for all safety inspections, tests, maintenance, and repairs.
• Assist and supervise third party contractors in conveyance modernization program.
• Utilize Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) program software to create process and complete planned and corrective maintenance work orders.
• Provide written and oral reports effectively.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

• High School graduate or equivalent required.
• Five years or more of journeyman level experience repairing and maintaining all forms of conveyances.
• Must have a valid California driver’s license and be able to maintain it throughout the course of employment.
• Must possess a valid general certification as a State of California Certified Competent Conveyance Mechanic (CCCM) and maintain it throughout the course of employment.
• Demonstrated experience with Motion Controls Engineering (MCE), Schindler, OTIS, O’ Thompson and Smart Rise conveyance controls.
• Software proficiency at an intermediate level in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Expert with all test instruments and tools of the trade.
• Trade school or apprenticeship training in trade.
• Knowledge of all levels of conveyance code requirements, e.g., State of California codes, Fire and Seismic Safety Codes, and their specific interpretations and applications to appropriate conveyance components.
• Working knowledge of UBC, OSHA, and ADA requirements as it relates to the function of conveyances.
• Ability to recognize discrepancies with respect to ADA and Fire/Life/Safety codes at each job and report to supervisor.
• Familiarity with all major conveyance manufacturers and equipment.
• Ability to correctly and skillfully operate the various standard tools and equipment of the conveyance mechanic trade, e.g., test lamps, ammeters, voltmeters, etc.
• Working knowledge of all conveyance systems, e.g., hydraulic, electric, gearless, MG Sets, variable voltage, and solid state; theories of operating and servicing procedures of conveyance systems, e.g., sequence of operations, motor controls, and dispatching.
• Ability to troubleshoot electro/mechanic systems for malfunctions, damage, or deterioration or need for adjustment by reading indicator lights on equipment, checking for burnt, loose, or dirty contacts and wires, worn out or broken parts and faulty wire insulation.
• Ability to read, interpret, and understand technical language in wiring diagrams.
• Ability to modify and/or adapt designs, procedures, or methods to make necessary alterations and modifications.
• Communicate professionally with the members of the Caltech community in all situations.
• Must maintain effective working relationships with others.
• Ability to work independently and follow through on assignments.
• Must be available to work various shifts as well as overtime and weekends as needed.
• Must have the ability to communicate in English.
• Using mechanical assistance, hoist, lower, push, and pull large objects weighing up to 500 lbs.
• Ability to distinguish among colors and work in confined spaces.
• Skill in estimating material and labor requirements to accomplish task.
• Must be able to lift up to 80 pounds of tools and equipment on a daily basis, bend in all directions, climb stairs and ladders, squeeze with arms and hands, operate machinery using hands, and work outdoors in all kinds of weather.
• Ability to distinguish among colors and work in confined spaces.

Preferred Qualifications

• A National Association of Elevator Contractors Certified Elevator Technician (NAEC CET) Certification OR a National Elevator Industry Education Program Certification.
• Demonstrated experience working with conveyance software tools.
• Additional trade school or apprenticeship desired.

• Additional trade school or apprenticeship desired.

• Possess a valid, City of Los Angeles, Journeyman Elevator Mechanic license throughout the course of employment.

• Demonstrated desire to continue education and/or training in conveyance systems as it pertains to the advancement of conveyance technology.

• Proficiency with AssetWorks and Kronos or similar preventive maintenance and timekeeping software would be a plus.
