Job Summary

This position reports to the Associate Director for Educational Outreach of the Caltech Center for Teaching, Learning, & Outreach (CTLO). The Outreach Program Coordinator will assist in development, coordination and implementation of year-round and summer outreach programs, events and activities on campus, in local schools and at public venues. They will collaborate with Caltech faculty, postdoctoral scholars and students to translate their work into educational programs, opportunities and experiences for K-12 and public audiences. They will also interface with partner organizations hosting science and engineering camps on campus each summer, and facilitate operation of CTLO’s summer Community Science Academy and Summer Research Connection programs.

Job Duties

  • Assist with matching Caltech researchers (faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and students) with opportunities to engage with local teachers and K-12 students
  • Help researchers develop K-12 lessons and classroom presentations that integrate with existing and developing standards
  • Assist with planning and implementing professional development programs and events for K-12 teachers
  • Assist with planning and implementing science and engineering programs and events for K-12 students
  • Coordinate field trip experiences for local schools
  • Assist in data collection, analysis and reporting for assessment and evaluation of outreach programs
  • Coordinate materials and supplies for outreach programs, including purchasing and inventory, in accordance with budgets and procurement procedures
  • Support campus student clubs and organizations in outreach efforts
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics) field, or in STEM education
  • Formal or informal teaching experience at the K-12 or undergraduate level
  • Experience using educational technology effectively
  • Demonstrated interest in designing, implementing, and presenting educational programs
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and problem solving skills
  • Excellent time management and project planning skills
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data from educational programs
  • Ability to work successfully with a variety of constituencies, ranging from young students to university faculty, and offices
  • A valid California Driver’s license, or be able to obtain one before employment begins and maintain it throughout the course of employment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience implementing summer research programs for K-12 students and/or teachers
  • Experience implementing summer science camps for middle and high school students
  • Experience facilitating educational collaborations between universities and local schools
  • Experience in iOS programming and/or in developing mobile apps
  • Experience assessing educational programs and learning outcomes
