Sessional Lecturer: Organic Chemistry
New York University Sydney
Location: The Rocks, Sydney
Work type: Casual
Applications close: Friday 2 December 2016
New York University (NYU) has established a global study away site in Sydney. Other NYU global academic centres are located in London, Paris, Florence, Tel Aviv, Buenos Aires, Madrid, Berlin, Prague, Accra, and Washington DC. NYU sends more students to study abroad than any other U.S. college or university.
We are seeking expressions of interest from Sydney-based academics to teach Organic Chemistry to undergraduate students during the NYU semester running from 31 January - 17 May 2017.
Experience and Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD in Organic Chemistry and experience teaching undergraduate students in this field.
The class being offered introduces advanced concepts in organic chemistry with particular emphasis on aromatic and carbonyl systems. It builds on a pre-requisite introduction to organic chemistry. The material is presented in the functional group framework, incorporating reaction mechanisms. Topics include structure and bonding of organic materials, nomenclature, conformational analysis, stereochemistry, spectroscopy, and reactions of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, amines, and carbonyl compounds. Multifunctional organic compounds are covered, including topics of relevance to biochemistry, such as carbohydrates, amino acids, peptides, and nucleic acids. Laboratories provide training in the syntheses of organic precursors in high yields and high purity needed for multistep procedures. The use of IR and NMR spectroscopy is explored.
Duties and Responsibilities
The appointed person will take responsibility for preparing the weekly lectures, recitations and laboratory classes and assignments.
Weekly lectures for students will be conducted from 9am-12pm on Mondays followed by two smaller recitation sessions from 2-3pm and 3-4pm. These will be held at the NYU Sydney Academic Centre located in The Rocks. Labs are held in Ultimo on Tuesday mornings from 9am-1pm.
Lecturers are paid at casual academic rates aligned with local enterprise agreements. In addition to their teaching duties, they will be paid to attend an induction meeting during the Orientation week prior and for periodic meetings and training.
How to Apply
To apply you will be required to submit a copy of your CV and a cover letter outlining your suitability for the role to Megan Carrigy, Associate Director for Academic Programs at NYU Sydney, via email email@example.com. Applications will be reviewed by NYU Sydney staff and by faculty in the NYU Chemistry Department.
