Qualified to be appointed professor is a person who has demonstrated both scientific and pedagogical skills. (HF 4, chapter, section 3)

In order to be appointed professor – in accordance with the appointment procedures at Linnaeus University – a person must have demonstrated scientific skills through independent, active research in accordance with current national standards, both qualitatively and quantitatively and at a level considerably exceeding that required of an associate professor.

The requirements for scientific skills also comprise requirements for demonstrated skills regarding planning and management of research. This includes management of research work in which other researchers who have defended their theses take part as well as supervision of doctoral students.

Pedagogical skills should have been demonstrated through teaching on first-, second- and third-cycle levels. This includes planning, implementation and evaluation of teaching as well as supervision and examination.

Assessment grounds

As assessment grounds for appointment as professor, the level of skills considered a requirement to be qualified for the appointment is to apply. The trial of the pedagogical skills is to be given as great importance as the trial of the scientific skills.

Meriting is the level of:

  • documented scientific skills through both depth and width in one's own research, success with applications for external funding and a strong standing in the international scientific community.
  • documented experience of supervision and examination at third-cycle level.
  • documented pedagogical skills through successful research basis in education at first- and second-cycle level.
  • documented administrative skills and ability to lead activities and to organise and lead research projects within the subject at an overall level.
  • documented good collaboration skills and ability to contribute to a good working environment.

When the university is to appoint new teachers, the applicants are to be selected who, through a qualitative assessment of the whole picture regarding competence and skills, are considered to have the best qualifications for the implementation and development of the tasks in question, and for contributing to a successful development of the activities.
