Assistant Vice President for Student Success
Description of Work Unit
The Division of Student Affairs (DSA) fosters a campus community that supports students in the development of their unique potential, inspiring them to be active learners, successful graduates, and engaged global citizens. The Division employs approximately 800 full-time staff with an annual budget of $130 million, and as importantly, seeks student affairs professionals of great character, who inspire our students as visionary leaders, and bring with them passion, positivity, and humor to their work and to the campus.
The Assistant Vice President for Student Success (AVPSS) is a full-time, 12-month position reporting directly to the Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA) and the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs (VPUA). The person in this position will undertake projects related to: (1) the University’s Student Success efforts, a joint responsibility of the VPSA, VPUA, and the Associate Provost for Educational Attainment (APEA); (2) overall leadership within the Division of Student Affairs, with particular emphasis on projects connecting student and academic affairs; and (3) other duties as assigned by the VPSA and VPUA.
The University’s Student Success Initiatives focus on developing and implementing procedures that promote curricular and co-curricular engagement and integrative learning. Therefore, successful candidates will be highly collaborative, innovative, strategic thinkers who can cultivate and develop support across the University for initiatives that promote undergraduate students’ academic success, with particular emphasis on persistence to graduation and closing graduation gaps. Successful candidates will also understand the value of and have experiences with integrating academic and student affairs initiatives.
Required Job Qualifications
• A terminal degree from an accredited institution.
• Minimum of 7 years of professional work experience in a college or university with a record of increasing responsibility that includes interdivisional collaborations involving student success initiatives and the development and implementation of programs in student affairs and/or linking academic and student affairs.
• A record of sustained professional involvement in research and programs addressing learning, undergraduate student persistence to graduation, and students’ intellectual and personal development.
• Ability to analyze and present research findings involving quantitative and qualitative data on student success.
Preferred Job Qualifications
• A doctoral degree from a regionally accredited university
• Supervisory experience for budget and personnel.
• Demonstrated appreciation for individual differences and a commitment to support the University’s priorities related to diversity and inclusion.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a team-based, multicultural environment.
• Knowledge of, and experience with, university programs that link academic and student life programs to enhance the undergraduate experience and promote student success.
• Line responsibility for advising programs in a university setting.
• Experience as a team leader who can provide direction and guidance to the Student Affairs Division and help articulate a vision for the future of the Division and its important position on the Colorado State campus.
• Experience working with faculty groups on the elements of teaching and learning as they apply to student engagement and academic success in research universities.

Job Duty Category Project Management Duty/Responsibility
• Acting in concert with the VPSA, the VPUA, and APEA, provide leadership in the development and implementation of the University’s student success initiatives.
• Oversee and manage the Student Success budget.
• Provide planning support in start-up phases of new student success initiatives.
• Support the development of the Student Success Initiatives by initiating, facilitating, assessing, or leading activities as determined by the VPSA and VPUA. Such activities will include presentations to groups on- and off-campus, including the Cabinet, Board of Governors, and external policymakers and stakeholders.
• Participate in, and provide support for, the activities of the Provost Advisory Committee for Student Success (PASS), Advisory Committee on Undergraduate Affairs (ACUA), and other such committees.
• Collaborate with others on campus to submit and implement grants in support of CSU’s student success initiatives. Current grants include the Integrative Planning and Advising for Student Success (IPASS) Grant. The AVPSS co-chairs the implementation committee for the IPASS grant with the VP for Information Technologies and Dean of Libraries. The systems included in the IPASS implementation include: EAB’s SSC Campus, U.direct/U.achieve, Beacon, Canvas, Ellucian Mobile, Learning Analytics.
• In collaboration with the VPSA, VPUA, Vive Provost for Faculty Affairs (VPFA), and the APEA, serve as a point of contact with department chairs, associate deans, faculty, and unit leaders in Academic Affairs and Student Affairs for the purpose of soliciting input about, and generating support for, initiatives promoting curricular and co-curricular learning experiences, persistence, and degree-completion.
• Collaborate with cross-campus units in support of student success efforts at CSU. Units include but not limited to Institutional Research, Diversity, Center for Advising and Student Achievement, Enrollment and Access.

• Serve on University committees representing the Division of Student Affairs and those associated with student success interests.
• Supervise the Director of the Academic Advancement Center, Executive Director of the Career Center, and Student Success Projects Manager.
• Provide direction and leadership for Academic Support cluster in Student Affairs (includes the Academic Advancement Center, Career Center, Center for Advising and Student Achievement, Colorado Challenge, and Student Success Projects Manager).
Percentage Of Time 30 Job Duty Category Assessment and Research Duty/Responsibility
• Stay current with research in the field of student learning, engagement, and persistence to graduation that is relevant to possible initiatives by the divisions of student and academic affairs. Develop and maintain a network of contacts among researchers and practitioners in the field, and use this network to identify relevant models and best practices.
• Collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative institutional data from existing sources on issues relevant to promoting student academic success and persistence to graduation. Conduct new studies when appropriate.
• Communicate relevant data and studies in a manner that is useful and understandable.
• Participate in the national conversation on Student Success through publications and presentations at regional, national, and international conferences.
