Post-doc in Precision Agriculture and Pedometrics with the focus on Soil Spectroscopy

Department of Soil and Environment
A post-doc position in Precision Agriculture and Pedometrics is available at the Department of Soil and Environment within the Faculty of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Skara. This announcement is part of a major promotion of post-docs at the Faculty. The Department of Soil and Environment pursues research, education and environmental assessment work related to soil and its sustainable use. The majority of the department’s operations and employees are located in Uppsala, but the Unit for Precision Agriculture and Pedometrics is located in Skara. Precision agriculture and pedometrics is growing research area and the unit has a leading position within the area of soil spectroscopy.

Duties: The holder of this post-doc position will conduct research in pedometrics, with emphasis on soil spectroscopy. Topics of interest include sampling and calibration strategies and algorithms for modelling small-scale variation by using large-scale spectral libraries. For cost-efficiency reasons, large-scale calibration models are favourable and therefore national and even global models have attracted large interest. A challenge is to find robust models describing soil variation at the farm or field scale.

Qualifications: The applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant branch of natural science such as soil science or agronomy. Documented experience and skills in near infrared spectroscopy and multivariate calibration techniques are required. Experience of soil spectroscopy, including the near and mid infrared range, and a well-developed network within the research area will count as merits. Good communication skills in spoken and written English are required. Since a post-doc position is the first step in an academic career, priority will be given to those applicants who have obtained their PhD level no more than three years before the time of application.

Place of work: Skara

Form of employment:  Temporary employment 6 months or longer,
A postdoctoral position is limited to two years.

Extent: 100%

Starting date: By agreement

Application: We welcome your application marked with Ref no. SLU ua 2016.2.5.1-4221.

Please submit your application to the Registrar of SLU, P.O. Box 7070, SE-750 07 Uppsala, Sweden or registrator@slu.se no later than December 9, 2016.

Specific documents attached: Should be written in English and contain: 1) An up-to-date CV, including a list of publications, 2) proof of PhD degree and 3) a description of past research, current research interests and areas of research the applicant wants to develop further (max. 3 A4 pages). The names and contact information for at least two references must be provided
