Chief Information Officer
Queen Mary University of London – Chief Information Officer
“We are guided by the idea of a university as a centre for the development of fundamental ideas and the expansion of the boundaries of knowledge, independent of political and other transient opinions”.
Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) is one of the UK’s foremost research-intensive higher education institutions. The 2014 Research Excellence Framework placed us in the top ten UK multi-faculty universities for the quality of our research, confirming our place in the very top group of research-led universities, as we create and disseminate knowledge across the full disciplinary spectrum. Based in a creative and culturally diverse area of east London, we have a historical and deeply-held commitment to social justice and public engagement, and we consistently score more highly for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey than any other London Russell Group university.
This unique combination of scholarship at the highest level and an abiding commitment to the principles of widening access and public engagement sits at the core of all we do. Our mission and success as an institution depend on our staff and students having the academic freedom to pursue, create and share knowledge within the context of promoting an open, enquiring, educated and tolerant society, thereby transforming and impacting on the wider world.
A key imperative underlying each of these themes is the delivery of world-class information services on a modern technological footing based on student and staff needs. The new CIO, reporting to the COO, will champion and deliver a new IT strategy with a transformational vision for digital information systems and technology. Following a period of significant change there is a need to re-visit the basics, ensuring that delivery of our ambitious plans are built on a solid foundation with a focus on delivery of high quality, customer focused service. As CIO, you will be joining during an unprecedented period of change and one of the most important elements of the role is to understand the influence and role of IT in a changing HE landscape to ensure we maximise the resources available to us as we drive to achieve our goals.
This role requires an exceptional and visionary IT leader with an outstanding record of achievement in a highly complex, multi-faceted research intensive organisation. With an embedded customer first ethos you will be an excellent communicator who can align the varying views of many stakeholders with disparate requirements. Your approach must balance shrewd organisational insight, an absolute focus on high quality and resource efficient delivery and a demonstrable understanding for the ambitions of QMUL. Higher education experience is not essential but empathy and appreciation of the challenges and drivers of a sector undergoing substantial, market driven change would be essential.
