Dean of the School of Education
Tracking Code 9737/K0816
Boston University seeks a visionary academic leader and distinguished scholar to serve as the Dean of the School of Education. We seek a person with an active record of pursuing equity, diversity and inclusion in support of students, faculty and staff. We invite inquiries, nominations, and applications.
From its founding in 1918, the BU School of Education (SED) has been committed to both the preparation of educators and the advancement of research and scholarship. Its programs serve approximately 300 undergraduate and 700 graduate students. SED alumni go on to serve as classroom teachers, school and district administrators, counselors and psychologists in school and community settings, non-profit leaders, and university faculty. Its 60 faculty (50% tenure track) combine practical classroom expertise and scholarly attainments. As one of the smaller schools within a large university, we sustain a strong sense of community and collaboration among faculty, students, and staff. However, the School also has the resources of a major university: libraries, laboratories, lectures, concerts, and an abundance of courses and faculty in a wide range of academic disciplines and professional fields.
Boston University, a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), is one of the leading private research and teaching institutions in the world, with two primary campuses in the heart of Boston and programs around the globe. The University enrolls over 33,000 students, including over 16,000 undergraduates and employs nearly 4,000 faculty members across 17 schools and colleges. BU is the 4th largest private research university in the United States and one of the Boston area’s largest employers. BU’s students come from all 50 states and more than 100 countries.
The dean serves as the chief academic and executive officer of the School of Education, and reports to the Univeristy Provost. The dean has direct responsibility for the school’s academic programming, financial management, student affairs, and research productivity, as well as development and external relations. The successful candidate will be an innovative academic leader with a record of outstanding professional accomplishment appropriate for a tenured full professor at Boston University. The dean will be expected to lead SED’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. He or she will be expected to work with University leadership to address undergraduate enrollment challenges, and to lead continued development of innovative graduate initiatives.
