Director of Centre for Student Success

Competitive salary

The University of East London is a dynamic university in the heart of London’s largest regeneration area and adjacent to the site of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The University is known for its commitment to civic engagement and is an anchor university in East London. Most of its 19,000 students come from East London and represent a diverse and aspirational student body who are keen for a transformational student experience at UEL.

As part of the launch of our new academic strategy, UEL is creating a new Centre for Student Success.  The ambition of the Centre for Student Success is to provide an academic support network for students from their first year through to employment. The Centre is home to several different units and partners across the university. These include learning support services, career services and units dedicated to student engagement and retention. The Centre for Student Success empowers students to become engaged and connected; and collaborates with academics and learning professionals in order to enhance students’ academic skills and to support their personal and professional growth.

The Centre for Student Success:

  • Contributes to positioning UEL as a place of choice for traditionally excluded and marginalized students by developing and delivering access and awareness interventions;
  • Provides opportunities for students to improve their numeracy, study and writing skills;
  • Assists students in developing educational plans to achieve their academic and life goals;
  • Fosters students’ intercultural skills and the appreciation of the value of working in a diverse and multi-racial classroom;
  • Provides training and development for undergraduate and graduate students to work as interns and peer assistants;
  • Provides supplemental instruction for traditionally difficult modules;
  • Develops retention and out-reach programmes for students who are academically at-risk;
  • Provides transition programmes for incoming students and their families.

The founding Director will lead this important Centre through its development. We need a Director who can combine successful management and leadership with a strong track record in delivering innovative projects and student success. Your ability to engage key stakeholders and successfully develop new opportunities particularly with employers will be of paramount importance, as will your ability to oversee multiple projects and teams in the process of delivering key aspects of our academic strategy. This is an exciting role for the right person at an institution that embraces a student body which represents the next generation of university learners.

A successful external candidate for this position would be employed by UEL Professional Services Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of UEL. Employees of UEL Professional Services Ltd work alongside UEL colleagues in delivery of UEL’s mission, and UEL Professional Services Ltd will adopt UEL HR policies and procedures in full.
