Exoplanet Archive Scientist
The NASA Exoplanet Science Institute (NExScI, http://nexsci.caltech.edu/) is the science operations and analysis center for NASA’s Exoplanet Exploration Program. NExScI provides tools and archives for the exoplanet community, administers the Sagan program of fellowships and workshops, and supports the Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer and administration of the NASA Keck telescope time. One of these archives is the NASA Exoplanet Archive which collects and serves public data to support the search for and characterization of exoplanets and their host stars and provides tools to work with these data. The current contents include extensive literature data on confirmed planets from space surveys (Kepler and K2), ground-based transit surveys (SuperWASP and KELT), as well as planets discovered with the radial velocity, imaging and microlensing techniques. Additionally, the Exoplanet Archive is the mission archive for Kepler pipeline data products, including the planet candidate list. The Exoplanet Archive also provides the infrastructure for ExoFOP (Exoplanet Follow-up Observing Program) website that facilitates follow-up observations of Kepler and K2 targets. Over the next few years, ExoFOP will be expanded to support additional community efforts on targets for TESS, the NASA/NSF-Explore initiative, and potential WFIRST exoplanet imaging and microlensing targets.
NExScI anticipates hiring a staff scientist with a strong interest in exoplanets to work with the Exoplanet Archive group. Applicants interested in any area of exoplanet research are invited to apply; those with observational experience in transits, radial velocity, high contrast imaging, or microlensing are particularly encouraged.
The scientist will participate in the development, maintenance and expansion of datasets and tools within the Exoplanet Archive and ExoFOP. The job responsibilities include working closely with other scientists and developers within the group to identify relevant data for inclusion in the archive, defining and assisting in the development of tools for working with exoplanet data, assisting in the maintenance of current data and tools and interfacing with the exoplanet community.
In addition, the scientist will be expected to conduct an independent research program in exoplanet science. The ability to work well in a team and to interface with the broader community is required.
- PhD in Astronomy, Physics, or a related scientific field.
- 1+ years professional experience in astronomy, which can include postdoctoral positions.
- Experience with astronomical data analysis in exoplanet research.
- Strong communication skills, and the ability to work well with others on a small team.
- 3+ years professional experience in exoplanet astronomy.
- Experience working on large datasets, astronomical archives, or in a science center.
- Preference may be given to candidates who can start immediately.
