Job Description

WORK HOURS: THURSDAY - MONDAY 2PM - 10PM

DESCRIPTION:

The position is a Maintenance Mechanic within the BUMC Office of Facilities Management. The individual will be part of the maintenance team responsible for executing both the scheduled preventative and the reactionary maintenance program.  The focus of the individual’s tasks will be associated with the operation of the Biological Safety Laboratories (BSL) including core infrastructure and ancillary support systems.

DUTIES:

  • Troubleshoot and perform maintenance and service work on pumps, air handlers, and on other building systems.
  • Basic electrical repairs, office, lab, etc. ex. Change interior, exterior and exit light bulbs
  • Replace, belts, bearings filters, motors/pumps and adjust alignment.
  • Install new and repair/replace basic infrastructure in laboratory environment.
  • Basic plumbing services; sinks, toilets, and other plumbing infrastructure
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance.
  • Maintains and repairs building HVAC and control systems and related components for safe efficient and cost effective operation.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs equipment, such as high and low pressure steam lines, steam boiler, steam traps, pumps, heat exchangers, control valves etc.
  • Prepare stock orders for purchasing
  • Escort contractors for systems maintenance and repair.
  • Installs, maintains and calibrates Building Automation System (BAS) components.
  • Trains to and follows established safety procedures including use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Ensures work areas are clean and free of debris upon completion of all tasks.
  • Responds to calls from the Control Center.
  • Must attend certificate training provided by BUMC: ex. Lockout tag out, NFPA, Hazardous communication

Required Skills

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to diagnose, repair problems/develop estimate, order materials and track cost
  • Must have a working knowledge of computers, and office suite software.
  • Ability to understand and learn multiple disciplines: including but not limited to electrical, mechanical, plumbing and controls.
  • Ability to read blue prints.
  • 3-5 years of experience in building maintenance of air handlers, chillers, pumps, electrical and utility systems
  • Ability to read, write, speak the English language.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts driver’s license
  • Ability to work independently or in a group.
  • Must successfully pass NEIDL and associated background checks as determined by the University at the time of hire and continue to meet standards of the background check throughout the period of employment.
  • Must be able to lift and move items and equipment up to 70 pounds.
  • Must be able to use ladders to access elevated areas such as catwalks.
  • Must be able to work in close proximity to animals.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Building automation and DDC controls on HVAC systems experience, preferably Siemens Insight APOGEE
  • Electrical, HVAC or Plumbing License
  • 5 years of experience in commercial heating systems, steam, hot water, in an institutional or laboratory environment.
  • 5 years related experience in maintenance and repair of building systems, including but not limited to HVAC plumbing and electrical systems.
  • Mass. Boiler Operators License.
  • Mass. Waste Water operator’s license.
  • Mass Plumber’s License
  • Mass. Journeyman Steamfitter’s License
  • Mass. Electrician’s License.
  • Mass. Refrigeration License and a Federal Reclamation License.
  • Certified Backflow Prevention Device Inspector.
