Delft University of Technology
Chair of Micro-optics and Optomechatronics

The Faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering (3mE) at TU Delft is seeking to appoint a Chair of Micro-optics and Optomechatonics within the Department of Precision and Microsystems Engineering (PME). TU Delft is a global top 100 research-intensive University aiming to make significant contribution towards a more sustainable society. The University conducts ground-breaking scientific and technological research which is acknowledged as world-class, trains scientists and engineers with a genuine commitment to society, and helps to translate knowledge into technological innovations and activity with both economic and social value.

The Chair of Micro-optics and Optomechatronics will form the basis for a new group within PME, complementing the four existing groups in Micro and Nanoengineering, Structural Optimisation and Mechanics, Dynamics of Micro and Nano Systems, and Mechatronic System Design. The new Chair will strengthen the research, education, and valorisation activities in the design and development of enabling technologies to enhance performance and capabilities of small scale and high-precision machines and devices in the field of Micro-optics and Optomechatronics. The Chair will further develop the research and education in optics, micro-optics, optomechatronics, photonics, and micro-mechanics within 3mE in a way that on the one hand brings together and extends ongoing activities, and on the other hand initiates new directions.

The desired field of expertise of the new chair is situated in the broad area of miniaturization of complex mechanical devices where optics is indispensable to reach the micro and nanoscale, and achieving micro and nanometer precision in fields such as light-guided manufacturing, industrial imaging, sensing in health and life sciences, photonics, and consumer optics. The preferred candidate will have a world-leading research profile demonstrated by highly cited top publications in top peer-reviewed journals and conferences, and a successful track record in securing external research funds. S/he should be able to inspire BSc, MSc and PhD students as well as those in adjacent disciplines.
