The veterinary technician is responsible for providing consistent and high quality care for laboratory animals in accordance with Animal Welfare Act, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, NIH policies and guidelines and all other applicable regulations and policies. Primary Job Responsibilities: 75% of veterinary technicians time is dedicated to the following: Complete daily clinical health observations for multiple laboratory research animals and administer clinical treatments in an expeditious manner and according to established protocols. Must be able to work independently. Provide both written and/or verbal updates on health cases and animal health rounds to research clinical veterinarian and other department staff members as well research lab members. Interacts with research lab staff on daily basis in person and electronically about health cases and treatment orders directed by veterinarian(s). May assist with providing veterinary coverage to animal housing outside of central housing. Maintain accurate records for all species. 25% of veterinary technicians time is dedicated to the following: Assist with the maintenance and upkeep of rodent sentinel colony program in assigned areas. Assist with monthly inventory and equipment oversight. Assists with and prepares for quarterly Non-human primate testing. Work with research laboratory staff to complete special service requests when directed by manager. Participate in the environmental enrichment program and may perform behavioral assessments when requested. Trains animal care staff and laboratory personnel in areas such as clinical diagnosis, terminology, restraint and protocol related procedures. May perform microsurgery to assist in re-derivation procedures. Perform research or technical procedures for investigators on a fee-for-service basis when requested.
May be required to work some after -hours or weekend/holiday periods. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Education & Certifications: In Order of Preference A.S. or B.S., in life science discipline or veterinary technology. AALAS certification at LAT level Preferred LATg or goal of achieving LATg within one year of hire is desirable. Certified Veterinary Technician is preferable or eligible to sit for VTNE.
