The Instructional Designer will be responsible for the instructional design and production of interactive training courses primarily in distance-based formats across New England. The Instructional Designer will be part of an Education Team and the members are cross-trained in webinar technologies, web production software, and learning management systems to build capacity for conversion of existing classroom material and for developing new content into distance-based modalities. A key requirement of the position is the ability to balance autonomous self-motivated work with collaborative teamwork. This approach is necessary to creating highly refined finished training products.

The Instructional Designer is expected to:

• Conduct an ongoing review of existing training materials produced by our office or partnering organizations for relevance in teaching public health competencies to public health professionals. These training materials will include training modules, presentations, webinar recordings and handouts.

• Assist in project management for the production of training materials
o Use project plan and delivery schedule from our department’s best practices guide (“The E-learning Toolkit”).
o Facilitate regular collaboration meetings/conference calls with relevant stakeholders throughout the process of developing trainings on any given topic. Stakeholders may include BU Staff, Subject Matter Experts, consultants, and/or partnering institutions.
o Identify potential obstacles to the on-time delivery of highly refined finished training products.
o Propose strategies that supervisors/training program leaders may institute to address these obstacles.

• Work with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to
o Identify specific skills and knowledge learners will need to meet competencies;
o Confirm whether the existing training materials meet those competencies and identify any content gaps with SMEs.
o Create/obtain additional content or materials as needed.

• Create storyboards for online, self-guided training modules
o Revise or develop learning objectives to guide the module development and learners assessments
o Structure content and activities for asynchronistic learning that is skills-based, hands-on and interactive.
o Create learner assessments including pre-post tests and interactivity.

• Produce distance-based training modules
o Convert storyboards into web-based format using software and applications such as Softchalk, WordPress or Articulate Storyline. These storyboards maybe developed by this position, or by other stakeholders.
• Assist in the “Go-Live” processes (uploading trainings to Learning Management Systems such as Moodle, Blackboard etc). This will include creating course pages and assisting the development of course materials.
• Assure 508 compliance and cultural appropriateness for all trainings

Required Skills

3-5 years of experience and an Associate's degree required, Master's Degree preferred.

Course work in Instructional Design or Education-related discipline. Strong communication skills, team-player and attention to details.

Preferred Skills
Understanding of online pedagogy experience and competence with Adobe products, Articulate Storyline, Wordpress, HTML, and LMS systems such as Blackboard, Canvas and Moodle. Experience in online course development. Experience with user interface design, universal design, and inclusive design preferred.
