As an Engineer in the EP-CMX-SCI Section, you will be integrated into the Technical Coordination team, which works with all CMS stakeholders (particle detector teams, the central collaboration team and the technical support teams from CERN departments) to plan and carry-out the operation, maintenance, consolidation and upgrade of the Compact Muon Solenoid plus its associated systems. You will play an important part in the day-to-day execution of these activities, supported by the technicians, designers and specialists of the CMX group and the CMS Collaboration.
Take a leading role in maintaining or repairing the common systems and infrastructure of the CMS detector and in engineering their consolidation and upgrade to exploit improved LHC performance. Your role will involve a wide variety of separate but related tasks/projects and may include:
- Mechanical design of specialist equipment (such as that used in opening and closing the detector and providing access to the various system). This will involve defining functional requirements; developing technical specifications; design (or supervision of design); integration checks; oversight of commercial procurement or manufacture at local or central CERN workshops; structural analysis and testing to ensure compliance with codes in force; reception and commissioning.
- Leading/Supervising teams carrying out activity in the CMS underground cavern (during LHC shutdown periods) or preparatory activity in the surface halls and facilities.
- Interfacing to CERN technical groups responsible for the different parts of the common detector infrastructure (magnet & cryogenics, opening/closing system, power, cooling, gas, humidity control, etc) and the supporting industrial infrastructure, as well as those providing services such as rigging, survey etc.
- Designing local work areas for custom manufacture, repair or assembly and supervising their implementation and use.
- Specifying and organising procurements of standard and custom equipment, components and services.
- Devising and documenting new or improved procedures for accessing the major elements of the CMS apparatus efficiently and safely.
- Facilitate and oversee the work of Collaboration teams from around the world in maintaining the existing particle detection systems of CMS and installing new ones, ensuring this is done in a safe and effective manner.
- Contribute to the planning of CMS activities at LHC Point 5 and other CERN sites, developed by the Technical Coordination team. Assume particular responsibility for day-to-day planning and its execution, taking into account the available CERN and CMS resources.
Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical engineering or a related field.
Experience and competencies
The experience required for this post are :
- Demonstrated experience in the design, construction, assembly and maintenance of large, complex equipment.
- Demonstrated supervisory and teamwork skills, involving both experience in leading multi-disciplinary teams, preferably in a multi-national environment, and the ability to integrate into existing teams.
- Demonstrated flexibility and initiative when faced with a variety of engineering and organisational challenges in a large and complex technical environment.
The technical competencies required for this post are:
- Installation & dismantling of mechanical equipment & systems: which provides the framework for complex detector systems.
- 3D & 2D technical drawing: experience in supervision and control of drafting process, knowledge of catia v5 or equivalent.
- Commissioning & maintenance of mechanical equipment & systems.
- Organisation, planning and control: coordination of multi-disciplinary activities .
- Project management: planning, resource and risk management, quality assurance and control..

Note on Employment Conditions
We offer a limited-duration contract for a period of 3 years. Limited-duration contracts shall terminate by default on their date of expiry.
Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.
These functions require:
- Participation in a regular stand-by duty, including nights, Sundays and public holidays.
- Work in radiation areas.
- Interventions in underground installations.
- A valid driving licence.
- Shift work, when required by the needs of the Organization.
- Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
