The Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology at the Boston University School of Medicine invites applications for an entry level Research Assistant Professor from candidates with expertise in cognitive neuroscience and/or systems neurobiology to work in the Laboratory of Human Neurobiology. The candidate will be supported fully from grants, and will have the opportunity to work closely and in collaboration with a major pharmaceutical company in the Boston area. The successful candidate will have a track record of scholarly achievements as demonstrated by publications and a strong potential for developing an extramurally funded research program. Preference will be given to candidates with research programs and expertise that offer synergy with other investigators in the department, particularly those working in areas of human aging and age-related disease. Salary is highly competitive. The candidate will also be expected to actively participate in education of graduate students in courses in the cognitive and behavioral neurosciences. The selected candidate will work on a broad variety of studies interrogating how neurological pathologies (including, but not limited to, Alzheimer’s Disease, Mild Cognitive Impairment, Parkinson’s Disease, schizophrenia, and opioid addiction) perturb human neurobiology and, consequently, cognition and behavior. These studies include pre-clinical instrument and task validation investigations.
- Doctoral Degree (M.D., Ph.D. or equivalent)
- Previous experience working or leading a clinical or research study strongly preferred
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Computer literacy, proficiency in MS Office, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
- Experience in Programming (MatLab, Linux, ePrime, FSL, etc.), Image Processing (EEG and fMRI), and Statistical (SPSS, JMP, r, etc.) packages preferred
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple projects and resources
- Facilitate the development of study protocols, project plans, timelines, study reports, IRB submissions, and scheduling by coordinating input from various sources including literature, experts, collaborators, and internal team members
- Perform other clinical and research duties when requested and serve as the point of contact to support staff, investigators, and researchers regarding investigational logistics and protocols to resolve day-to-day problems
- Interact with subjects prior to and through research studies including screening, scheduling, task administration, and other subject management activities
- Assist in the preparation of scientific abstracts and manuscripts to disseminate results through peer reviewed manuscripts and academic conferences
- Apply for additional funding including drafting grant applications, identifying new funding opportunities, and assist in program management of ongoing research grant administration.
- Oversee implementation of study protocol and integration of methodologies including, but not limited to neuropsychological testing, EEG, MRI, non-invasive brain stimulation, and other behavioral, neurophysiological, and biological assays.
About the Employer
The Laboratory for Human Neurobiology (HUB), directed by Dr. Kevin “Kip” Thomas, focuses on the processes that underlie cognition and learning in the human brain, and how those processes are altered in disease. The HUB is composed of a large staff, including PhD and Masters students, full time research assistants, undergraduates, technicians, and high school interns. The HUB is a part of the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology, and shares a space with two associated Masters programs: the Masters in Healthcare Emergency Management (HEM) and the Masters in Bioimaging (MBI). As a result, collaboration between laboratory research projects and graduate theses and practica is common, including applied behavioral research in the emergency management space and the targeted development of neuroimaging techniques. In addition, the HUB benefits from the outstanding Core Facilities of Boston University, including the Center for Biomedical Imaging (CBI) located immediately below the laboratory, which contains a dedicated research 3 Tesla Philips Achieva MRI scanner for both functional and structural scans.
