Durham University is one of the world’s top research intensive universities with strengths across the Arts and Humanities, Sciences and Social Sciences. The University sits in a beautiful, historic city where it shares ownership of a World Heritage Site with Durham Cathedral, one of the greatest Romanesque buildings in Western Europe. A collegiate University, Durham recruits outstanding students from across the world and offers an unmatched wider student experience.

Join us as Lecturer in Classics or Ancient History, and you will discover a wonderful intellectual and social environment in which to make a career. Here, you will explore the frontiers of knowledge.

This is an exciting opportunity to make a major contribution to the development of research and teaching in one of the UK’s very best Classics departments. As part of a significant programme of expansion and investment, you will enjoy generous support for developing internationally recognised research and innovative approaches to teaching. Whatever your interests - from ancient philosophy, to the material culture of the ancient world - you will play an important role in securing research funding and shaping our future.

To join us, you will need a good first degree and a doctorate in Classics or a relevant subject. You will bring to the role a personal research plan with potential to shape the disciplinary agenda or create public benefit in terms of individual, societal or economic wellbeing. Crucially, you will have a track record of high quality teaching, including the ability to teach ancient Greek and Latin.

If you are an outstanding, enterprising, intellectually curious academic with ambition and a strong sense of collegiality, please do consider applying to Durham University.
