The Asian Studies Program in the School of Languages and Cultures teaches key areas of Asian culture and society, an important aspect of which is Buddhist Studies. We offer the opportunity to join a dynamic group of scholars from Asian Language departments whose teaching and research forms the basis of the Asian Studies Program. As well as covering important aspects of contemporary Asia, the Program has a strong commitment to studies of the classical bases of Asian society and languages.

Applications are invited for appointment to a five-year contract position of Lecturer in Tibetan Buddhism within the School of Languages and Cultures subject to funding availability. The position is being funded by the Khyentse Foundation, the University Buddhist Education Foundation, and the Aberbaldie Foundation. 

As a successful applicant you will:

  • contribute to the teaching of undergraduate units of study in the Asian Studies program concerning Tibetan Buddhism, cultural relations between India, China, and Tibet, and Buddhist and Asian Studies more generally
  • contribute to the teaching of undergraduate Sanskrit in the Department of Indian Sub-continental Studies
  • contribute to the supervision of students in the honours program and act as a member of supervision committees of research degree candidates
  • maintain a research profile compatible with the School’s research programs
  • make an active contribution to the Buddhist Studies research seminars and the running of the Visiting Professor program
  • participate in the promotion of Buddhist studies within the wider community.

To be successful you will need:

  • a PhD in the field of Tibetan or Indo-Tibetan Buddhism
  • experience in teaching Tibetan and South Asian Buddhism at undergraduate level
  • experience in or potential for teaching Sanskrit at undergraduate level
  • experience in taking responsibility for and coordinating units of study in Buddhist studies or related fields
  • experience in research and publication in Buddhist Studies with an emphasis on Tibetan Buddhism
  • capacity to teach and supervise students from various cultural backgrounds
  • capacity to work flexibly and collaboratively in a team environment and to assume roles in administration and planning in the Department and School.
