Police Communications Tech Intern
Description of Work Unit
Support an atmosphere of safety and security conducive to the fulfillment of the academic mission of Colorado State University and respond to the needs of the campus community. This unit is the point of contact for system entry and deployment of law enforcement, fire, ambulance, rescue, other University departments and outside agency resources. The unit provides communication, support services and technical skills required to fulfill the mission of the CSU Police Department, and also provides education and referrals to the general public.
Evaluates urgency of incoming phone calls, prioritize phone call in relationship to other pending calls quickly by analyzing, interpreting and adapting written procedures, guidelines, professional standards of practice, laws, regulations and rules from memory. The requirement to make prioritization and deployment decisions immediately, particularly in emergent situations, does not allow reference to written materials for guidance, and decisions must be made based upon intimate personal knowledge of the numerous and varied directions and guidance resources.
This position is an entry-level position to be trained in collecting information from the general public and other agencies through verbal, written, or computer contact; analyze and evaluate the urgency of the request and prioritize the request; disseminate to proper personnel or deploy appropriate law enforcement, fire and ambulance services. This position accesses and researches numerous computer databases to gather information and apprise police officers and other agencies of information to assist in investigations. This position transmits and monitors radio transmissions so as to log officer’s daily activities, report incidents, and dispatch emergency and non-emergency services to necessary locations. This position gives pre-arrival medical assistance to the CSU community.
This is an entry level position that will go through extensive training and be closely supervised. The workload and knowledge requirements for this position are extensive. This position requires high integrity and ability to be accurate in even the smallest detail. This position also requires the ability to quickly process multiple requests and correctly prioritize, then deploy appropriate responders and monitor the activities of those responding via radio and Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD). They must be able to function, enter and retrieve data from numerous computer systems simultaneously. The length of time at this entry-level position will be approximately 10 to 12 months.
Must have a high school diploma or GED.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Must be willing and able to report to work without delay or interruption (30 minute response time preferred) to provide essential or emergency services to ensure health, safety, and welfare of the campus community
- Must be able to type 45 words per minute
- Must submit to and pass a hearing and eye sight test
- Must submit to and pass a polygraph and psychological exam
- Must submit to and pass a criminal history background check that includes a fingerprint check acceptable by Colorado State University and Colorado Crime
- Information Center (CCIC) standards (Must not have felony or serious misdemeanor arrests or convictions)
- Must be willing and able to work on a rotating shift of days, nights, weekends and holidays to serve the needs of our campus community. NOTE: This position may work any of the following shifts on a department rotating schedule: 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM; 5:00 PM – 3:00 AM; 9:00 PM – 7:00 AM; 11:00 AM – 9:00 PM. Shifts will be scheduled on weekdays and at least one weekend shift every week.
- Must be willing and able to be on-call in the event of an emergency as required for essential personnel at CSU.

- Dispatch experience in a police/emergency environment requiring regular use of knowledge in: police procedures, emergency medical protocol, and/or emergency vs. non-emergency situations.
- Demonstrated work experience and the ability to multi-task in order to perform simultaneous function (i.e. perform data entry while corresponding via radio with Law Enforcement personnel, gather and disseminate information to emergency responders while maintaining awareness of alarm systems both security and panic etc.)
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize incoming calls for service by using analytical skills, judgment, and problem solving skills.
- Ability to make quick decisions while remaining calm and maintaining composure in high stress/pressure situations.

- Responds to public safety issues by receiving emergency and non-emergency phone calls on multi-line phones, gathering information which then is analyzed and classified by priority, disseminating information, making referrals to appropriate personnel or departments, or determining a level of response of emergency services including police, fire, ambulance, or non-emergency services including but not limited to facilities services or parking services.
- Documents information received, explains police procedure and gives instructions to caller including medical instructions in life threatening situations.

- Logs and documents information received regarding emergency and non-emergency calls, in a Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD) system. Uses information in the same system to determine recommendations for resource deployment.
- Registers response time, police officer activity and status.
- Accesses information entered by other employees or to ascertain needs of other Emergency Service Agencies under mutual aid agreements.
- Access, use, and maintain knowledge of CCIC/NCIC systems (Colorado Crime Information Center/National Crime Information Center)

- Exchanges information with department personnel, specifically patrol officers, and other agencies via multichannel radio console.
- Expedites deployment of police, fire, and EMS to emergency situations and dispatches appropriate personnel to non-emergent police incidents.
- Clarifies or condenses information to be disseminated over the radio as needed.
- Monitors radio traffic from other law enforcement agencies in the area for officer safety issues.

- Monitors a computerized alarm system that sets environmental building controls and establishes security and fire alarm protections. Analyzes information and deploys appropriate police, fire or maintenance to that location.
- Logs alarms received, makes computer entries, and advises appropriate personnel for system problems encountered.

- Checks numerous camera systems at many different locations for suspicious activity and to assist responders with investigations and responses to calls for service.
