Position Summary

The individual in this position will be dedicated to providing after hours/ weekend anesthesia coverage. This positions primary responsibility is to cover on call for any anesthesia emergency (Small, Large, Exotic animal) presented to Colorado State University, Veterinary Medical Center. Yearly coverage for afterhours/on call anesthesia will be shared by this posted position, current on call employee and current anesthesia resident. The majority of yearly responsibility and weekly/weekend hours will be shared between this position and our current on-call employee. Holiday coverage will be expected and equally divided between all on-call individuals. This individual will also be responsible for covering any swing shift hours (starting at 4:30 pm weekdays) during their scheduled night of on-call. A flexible schedule of availability is expected of this applicant.

Required Job Qualifications

A doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) degree is required for this position and two years of primary anesthesia experience.

Beginning at 4:30 pm (physical presence will be required and/or on call) on weeknights, overseeing cases/recovery transitioned from anesthesia swing shift.

Be available (by PTT or cellular telephone) and within 20 minutes of the hospital at all times when on call to provide emergency anesthesia coverage.

A. Assist the students in performing a thorough and expedient patient evaluation including obtaining the patient history, physical examination, and assessing laboratory finding.

B. Provide and supervise students in administering appropriate support and monitoring of anesthetized patients in both large and small animal anesthesia areas.

C. Supervise students in transitioning the care of patients to the appropriate services or the Critical Care Unit.

D. Guide students and clinicians in the selection of appropriate post-operative analgesic drugs or techniques.
