University of the West of Scotland is an ambitious, growing university and we are at an exciting stage in our development. Expansion of the research and enterprise portfolio is an important element of the University’s corporate strategy towards 2020. MCS is a large (circa 2500 student FTEs) multidisciplinary school where the social sciences and creative and cultural industries meet. We are focused on becoming a centre of excellence in media, culture, and society education, knowledge creation and exchange. We offer a supportive and aspirational environment in which staff and students work in partnership to create societal and cultural change. Researchers in MCS have international reputations in many fields including, migration / refugee studies, health and health care inequalities, public policy and governance, visual culture, contemporary art representation, media practice, events and cultural policy, and digital cultures, and child employment. To build on the success, we are now looking for an outstanding individual to join the School Leadership Team and help take our research and enterprise portfolio work to a new height.

As the Assistant Dean (Research and Enterprise), you will, in consultation with the Dean, provide leadership, strategic and operational management in relation to all aspects of the School’s R&E portfolio. You will be responsible for leading on the enhancement, development and implementation of the School’s R&E plan, working with colleagues within the School and across the University as well as external organisations to increase the quality of research output, our enterprise activities, and the School’s success in attracting external funding to support our work. You will be able to demonstrate significant leadership and managerial experience in the UK HE sector and an advanced understanding of the research funding environment as well as business and commercial practice. You will be an excellent leader, communicator, negotiator and motivator with substantial experience of contributing to an environment that has led to significant improvement in research & enterprise activity and success.

You will have a strong track record to augment our team, and will exhibit an entrepreneurial and collaborative mindset to enhance the impact of your work. Your research expertise should be in a subject relevant to the School’s activities. It would also be preferable to have Senior HEA Fellowship or other professional qualification/ membership that reflects your standing in the community. A Professorial appointment is possible for suitable candidates.

The successful candidate will be based at our Ayr Campus with some scheduled activities at our other campus locations. Scotland boasts some of the most stunning countryside and coastline for outdoor and family life. We are close to Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city, with its rich heritage and vibrant cultural life, and just minutes from two of Scotland’s International airports.
