Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics

Position Summary
KIMEP University Language Center invites applicants for position of Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics. Area of specialization within the field of Applied Linguistics is open, though applicants should be able to teach a variety of courses. This is a full-time appointment, renewable subject to strong performance evaluations. Duties include (but are not limited to) teaching 12 hours per week (one-two graduate courses per semester and two-three undergraduate courses), advising graduate students, developing curricular materials for English language instruction and TEFL courses, conducting research in your specialized area, and university service.
Minimum qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition, Foreign Language Education, Bilingual Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or related field (the Ph.D. degree should be in hand by the application deadline);
  • Native or near-native spoken and written proficiency in English;
  • Two years of teaching experience at the college or university level;
  • Strong record of effective teaching;
  • Record of on-going research engagement or strong publication potential;
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in curricular innovation and pedagogical methods (e.g., online, hybrid, or distance learning);
  • Administrative and grant-writing experience is not required but desirable.

Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to candidates who are familiar with testing and assessment, child language acquisition and early bilingual education.

The Language Center
The Language Center has a faculty of 26 full-time faculty and 6 administrative staff.
The Master of Arts degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language at KIMEP University (Almaty, Kazakhstan) was established in 2006 to enhance the quality of English language instruction in Kazakhstan. It is now established as one of the leading Teaching English as a Foreign Language programs (MA FL) in Kazakhstan and Central Asia with an emphasis on research and on promoting the professional development of practicing teachers and received international accreditation from the Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation Austria in Fall 2013.

Rank and salary are competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Compensation after-tax compares favorably with net salaries in western countries. Limited on-campus housing is available to rent. New faculty members are provided with a reduced teaching schedule during the first semester. Summer paid teaching is typically available.
