Job Description

Student Financial Services (SFS) at Boston University Medical Campus is seeking an experienced financial aid professional to join its staff as Senior Assistant Director working specifically with students enrolled in the School of Medicine. Responsibilities include: managing a student caseload; determining financial aid eligibility for institutional, federal and private aid funding; providing financial aid counseling to students and families; conducting individual and group entrance/exit counseling sessions and debt management and personal budgeting presentations; serve as the liaison to the BUSM offices of Admissions, Student Affairs, Registrar, Stewardship and Donor Relations, and Development and Alumni Relations; attend and contribute during various interdepartmental meetings; manage various scholarship and loan programs and serve as the primary point of contact for internal and external personnel.

Essential Functions:

Determine eligibility for federal and private loans while ensuring students remain within the cost of attendance budget. Confirm student accounts are in good standing and credits are available prior to processing refunds for living expenses.

Counsel students and parents on the financial aid process and the availability and eligibility of federal and institutional funds. Prepare and conduct Interview Days presentations three days/week to BUSM candidates. Actively participate and contribute to SFS/BUSM Admissions joint progress meetings.

Provide daily student assistance. Respond to general inquiries by email correspondence, phone, one-on-one appointments and walk-in visits. Research and resolve student issues and concerns and provide follow up response.

Award institutional and federal financial aid to a caseload of over 700 students. Perform need analysis on student applications to award the appropriate scholarship and/or loan funds according to fund restrictions. Review and approve or deny student financial aid appeals.

Organize and lead group and individual Entrance and Exit sessions addressing students’ rights and responsibilities as student loan borrowers. Provide debt management/loan repayment counseling. 

Support the mission and efforts of SFS as a proactive team member. Prepare financial aid reports as requested by supervisor. Work collaboratively with the Priority Services Team and serve as support staff if needed. Help promote Financial Literacy workshops to students. Attend professional development conferences. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills:

A bachelor's degree with at least 3 years of financial aid experience. In addition, the candidate will work well independently and in a team environment; resolve complex problems; demonstrate effective time management, team building and collaborative abilities; exhibit strong problem solving, decision-making and effective communication skills; display customer service oral and written communication proficiency and aptitude, solid analytical and organizational abilities; be team-oriented, reliable and professional.  

Must be able to bend, stretch, reach, and carry up to 20 pounds in the context of regular office operations.
