Research Engineering Associate

This is a part time position working in the Beckman Institute Biological Imaging Facility, the only core facility on Caltech’s campus for light microscopy.

Job Duties

The new associate will be responsible for:

  • Training new users
  • Assisting the Director with application support and maintenance, calibration and repair of the instruments and/or computers in the Imaging Facility
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications

  • The minimum requirement is a college degree with experience in light microscopy, especially laser scanning confocal microscopy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience running a microscopy core is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with Caltech researchers is essential.
  • Applicants with experience on the newest Zeiss laser scanning confocal microscopes and Zen software preferred.
  • In addition to microscopes, the BIF also provides software resources for processing the data collected by researchers at Caltech.
  • Experience with the programs needed: Matlab, Imaris 3D imaging software and Huygens deconvolution software.
  • Also, experience with spectral unmixing and the analysis of said data is desirable since three BIF instruments have this capabiilty.
