About the role

​​The Dickson Poon School of Law is seeking to appoint the Michael Brown Lecturer in Construction Law and Dispute Resolution who will contribute to the teaching, research and other academic and professional activities of the Centre for Construction Law.

​The successful candidate’s principal teaching contribution will be in construction law and dispute resolution in our postgraduate programmes, with a strong focus on English private law, international arbitration and other dispute resolution methods such as adjudication and Dispute Boards.

​On the research side, along with a demonstrable high potential to attract funding, the successful candidate will be impact-focused and will be able to contribute, as required, to the research priorities of the Centre of Construction Law and Dispute Resolution.

The Centre was established in 1987 and is one of the leading institutions in the world in its field. Our current priorities include, but are not limited to, international dispute resolution in construction, diversity and inclusion, energy transition and sustainable procurement, in line with the following One King’s Impact themes: ‘a thriving and sustainable planet’; ‘advancing equality and social mobility’ and ‘peace and justice in a turbulent world.’ It is anticipated the role will focus heavily on English private law and dispute resolution.

​The successful candidate will be actively involved in the administration and academic life of a world leading law school and will carry out administrative duties at the Centre and at the Dickson Poon School of Law.

Key responsibilities:

• To take a key role in planning, organising and delivering teaching in construction law and dispute resolution on the MSc in Construction Law and Dispute Resolution and on other programmes and modules, as required
• To undertake high quality research in the area of construction law and dispute resolution, broadly defined, and contribute to research impact and grant capture
• To act as module coordinator for one or more of the modules and supervise dissertations
• To carry out administrative duties as requested by the Executive Dean and/or the Centre Director
• Contribute to the holistic development of our students through pastoral care and engagement in student experience activities, including by acting as a personal tutor
• Participate in student development processes, including student progress monitoring, education assessment and examination
• Be available for duties during assessment and marking periods
• Be responsible for marking formative and summative work and to provide timely and effective feedback working closely with module leaders and programme directors and the professional services programme and assessments team
• Accept academic administrative responsibilities, such as in School education or research roles, and in School or University governance structures, as commensurate with the candidate’s seniority and experience
• Engage in professional development to further the post holder’s career.

The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

This is a full time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

1. Track record of excellent teaching and knowledge of English private law, construction law and dispute resolution as the primary focus of the candidate’s teaching
2. Demonstrable ability to publish high-quality research in construction law and dispute resolution, including empirical research, with a potential to generate impact
3. Excellent oral and written communications skills
4. Demonstrable ability to work effectively within a team, work collaboratively and collegiately as well as on one’s own initiative
5. Completed or soon to be completed (i.e. within 3 months of submission at the time of the interview) PhD, DPhil, JSD in Law
6. Competence with electronic learning platforms and other IT skills

Desirable criteria

1. Experience in acting as module coordinator at postgraduate level
2. Teaching award e.g. Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy
3. The potential to attract major funding for research in the future

Grade and Salary: £53,149 – £62,422 per annum, including London Weighting Allowance
