About the Role

Working under the direction of Associate Professor Melanie MacGregor, The College of Science and Engineering is seeking a Research Associate in Plasma Biotechnology to undertake cutting edge research into surface modification to develop a batceriophage based product, known as “PhageMesh”. “PhageMesh” will enhance hernia surgeries by providing increased resistance to bacterial infections. The aim of this project is to enhance the quality of life for everyday people, improve outcomes in hernia surgery, and introduce innovative technology to a common medical procedure.

The Research Associate will primarily focus on utilising plasma techniques to immobilise phages onto the mesh. Therefore, a strong understanding of plasma technology and experience working in a chemistry lab are essential.

To be successful in this role, the Research Associate will:

  • Contribute to the planning and execution of research by offering new ideas, reviewing relevant literature and other sources of information, actively participating in the production of data, publication of scholarly articles and attending seminars, meetings and conferences.
  • Assist principal supervisors with supervision of postgraduate students and their training on specialist instruments and methods.
  • Assist in leading the Project by collaborating with the Project Research Team to successfully deliver project milestones and Key Performance Indicators.

About You

With a strong research background, your technical and analytical skills will enhance the research quality and contribute to the project's success.

You will be capable of working independently and as part of a team to develop, improve, and implement new technology. You will take a proactive approach to problem-solving, manage competing deadlines, and make decisions when necessary. Additionally, your strong communication skills will enable you to build and maintain positive relationships with various internal and external stakeholders.

As the successful candidate, you will also demonstrate:

  • Completion of a PhD in material science, chemistry or another relevant discipline.
  • Experience in plasma technology, coatings and analytical methods for surface characterisation.
  • Proven ability to independently manage, analyse and report scientific data in writing and keep clear and accurate records of research.
