About the opportunity
The Heat and Health Research Centre (HHRC) is a multidisciplinary initiative that aims to tackle the unprecedented current and future impacts of extreme heat and hot weather on human health. Through international cooperation with academics, industrial partners, policymakers, and healthcare professionals, the HHRC aims to better understand the causative pathways of - and provide evidence-based solutions for - the wide-ranging health impacts of heat exposure across the human lifespan.
We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate (Level A) to join a growing body of research and an ever-expanding research team to work on an NHMRC-funded project looking at sleep and climate change. The successful candidate will be supervised by Dr Yorgi Mavros, and will have opportunities to work on other projects within the HHRC. The ideal candidate will have a background in sleep science/physiology with prior experience conducting overnight sleep studies, and will work as part of a collaborative research team on a project that will evaluate the efficacy of fans in hot overnight environments.
Please note, a specific requirement of this role is to conduct overnight sleep data collection.
The majority of the research will involve overnight laboratory-based data collection using simulated thermal environments in the state-of-the-art climatic chamber situated at the Susan Wakil Health Building. This role will primarily oversee data collection, analysis, and manuscript preparation for this, and potentially other funded projects.
The successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate strong leadership, commitment and initiative, excellent writing and analytical skills, experience of conducting human-based experimental studies, as well as a proven ability to meet deadlines and work effectively as part of a collaborative team.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- Assist with participant recruitment and screening
- Independently conduct data collection, and/or educate other lab members to help with data collection
- Assist with ordering and procurement of laboratory supplies and maintenance of the laboratory
- Demonstrate strong leadership, commitment, and initiative
- Analyse data using appropriate statistical analysis and modelling
- Assist with preparation and submission of human ethics protocols to the University of Sydney Human Research Ethics Committee and, where required, University of Sydney Clinical Trials Governance
- Ensure that research protocols are adhered to and meet required standards, and can make sound recommendations on any adjustments that might be necessary
- Assists with the supervision of PhD, Masters and Honours students and their respective research activities
- Prepare quality manuscripts for submission in high-impact journals.
- Performs work activities relevant to the role's key accountabilities as approved by the Supervisor and commensurate to the role's classification level.
About you
- PHD in sleep science/medicine or similar/relevant field
- Extensive experience and familiarity in conducting overnight sleep studies
- Human thermal physiology experience desirable but not necessary
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work flexibly within large teams
- Good professional conduct when working with research participants, or communicating with other team members
- Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to communicate in a polite, constructive manner and ability to maintain effective collaborative working relationships
- Excellent writing, grant applications and analytical skills
- Good understanding in Human Research Ethics and Clinical Trials Governance procedures
- Sound understanding of data analysis methods pertinent to human physiological studies
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced research environment
- Able to handle the demands of working on high-quality, high-impact projects and see them through to completion
- Ability to manage workflows, multiple complex projects and meet strict deadlines.
