About the Role
The University Veterinarian will provide specialist expertise and advice in the management of animal welfare related to research and teaching and will be responsible for overseeing the welfare of animals and liaise with animal facility managers, staff and researchers as required. They will also inspect, monitor and provide veterinary care to all animals held in university facilities.
They will work closely with the - Research Ethics Officer, the University's Animal Ethics Committee and its subcommittees, and RDS, to ensure the use of animals in research and teaching is carried out according to the highest standards of animal welfare and complies with relevant State legislation and national guidelines.
The incumbent will review and develop technical policy and procedure documentation, regarding the care and use of animals in research and teaching.
Some out of hours work may be required to attend to emergency cases.

Research Development and Support (RDS) works with Flinders researchers, Colleges, Centres and Institutes, other portfolios, and external stakeholders to proactively support our research. Our teams underpin Flinders’ research evolving from ideas through to impact. RDS is part of the Portfolio of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and provides excellence in all facets of research management and promoting Flinders’ research.
About You
A passion for animal welfare with a demonstrated understanding of the use of animals used in teaching and research, you have experience in laboratory animal science and are familiar with relevant work health and safety systems.
Holding a current registration as a veterinary surgeon with the Veterinary Surgeons Board of SA, you also have a degree in veterinary science recognised in Australia, with extensive relevant experience.
In this role you will also demonstrate:
- An understanding of the South Australian Animal Welfare Act, the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes, and the operation of animal ethics committees in a university setting.
- A high level interpersonal and facilitation skills, with the ability to engage with staff and students across the University, as well as representatives of relevant external sites.
It is a requirement the successful candidate will monitor, inspect and provide veterinary care for a range of species of animals. Training opportunities in handling different animals will be available.
