The Role

We are currently looking for a dynamic and self-driven graduate research assistant, with a keen interest in computer vision, and mobile augmented reality to work on AniSteps, an Enterprise Ireland research project using mobile computer vision to monitor dog health. The project is divided into two phases, subject to the successful completion of the first phase (by May 2025) the project will be funded to complete the remaining 16 months.  Successful completion of Phase 1 involves the user field trial of a concept prototype. The subsequent phase of the project will involve the development of deep learning models for pet health assessment and the development of mobile and web interfaces for, owners and pet care professionals. The successful candidate will be responsible working with a research team to develop innovative solutions with practical applications in the rapidly growing PetTech sector.

The ideal candidate will possess an undergraduate degree in Robotics, Computer Science, or Electronic Engineering with experience of working on mobile augmented reality and will have a strong interest in research commercialisation and entrepreneurship. Experience of interactive applications development and user evaluations studies would be an advantage.  As one of the user groups is visually impaired experience of Universal Design or design for disability would be an advantage. The candidate must have a good working knowledge of the Apple development framework such as ARKit and knowledge of developing cross platform.  A deep knowledge of 3D vision and computer vision frameworks running on mobile devices.  

The successful candidate will report to Principal Investigator (PI) Professor Gerry Lacey via the Project  Research Lead. They will work alongside another research assistants and will be expected to contribute to technology development, publishing in top-tier peer-reviewed journals and conferences and should demonstrate a commitment to protecting intellectual property while pursuing innovative research.

As a researcher, you will work collaboration with an interdisciplinary team of researchers. In addition, you will have the responsibility of supporting thesis project students working in computer vision, augmented reality and robotics. You will also be expected to engage in professional development activities that will advance your training and career prospects, with guidance from the PI. Occasional travel may be required to visit collaborating organizations and attend team meetings.

Salary

Research Assistant Level 1 (2024): €31,962 p.a (1 Point)

Appointments will be made in accordance with public sector pay provisions.
