The research of the Environmental and Isotope Geochemistry Group at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Czech University of Life Science in Prague, opens a PhD position: Behavior of Poly- and Perfluoroalkyl Substances in Soil and Aqueous Environments supervised by Prof. Michael Komárek and co-supervised by Dr. Barbora Bösserle Hudcová.

Due to their high stability and serious concerns for health and the environment, poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have attracted much interest lately not only of the scientific community, but also of the general public (e.g., the movie Dark Waters). Previous attempts to investigate PFAS behavior and distribution at different trophic levels have been limited by the number of investigated species and the fate of PFAS across the whole food chain and abiotic factors is still unknown. This PhD topic proposes to fill this gap by investigating PFAS behavior in various environmental matrices, soils and surface waters, including their possible interactions with other conventional and emerging contaminants. The PhD position is funded by the Czech Science Foundation project 25-16341S.

The candidate should have an M.Sc. degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, or related field. We expect the candidate will be self-motivated and interested in the research topic. Good knowledge in analytical chemistry, and experience in working with tools for the analysis and visualization of data are expected. Additional skills will be gained and improved during the PhD project.

For further information send your CV, a motivation letter and a letter of recommendation to Prof. Michael Komárek (komarek@fzp.czu.cz) until March 10, 2025.

The position is limited to 4 years. The candidate will receive a monthly net scholarship of approximately 1000 EUR with bonuses.
The place of employment will be Prague. The targeted starting date of the PhD position is
October 1, 2025. Most of the foreign PhD candidates get a place at campus dormitories.
As a PhD student at the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Czech University of Life Sciences, the candidate is expected to publish results in international peer-reviewed journals, to participate at international conferences, etc.
