About the opportunity

The Research Fellow will contribute to the Centre of Excellence signature project Language and Cultural Diversity in ADM: Australia in the Asia Pacific as part of the ARC Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S) based at the University of Sydney node of the Centre.

The Research Fellow will contribute to projects that develop greater understanding of the landscapes of ADM across the Asia-Pacific region to understand the everyday dimensions of ADM in specific local, national, or transnational settings. Using digital ethnography, design anthropology and other participatory approaches, projects may involve engagement with communities, NGOs, industry, government, and other stakeholders who are shaping the practice of ADM. Possible project areas may include a focus upon FinTech and digital financial services, technology infrastructures and networks, the use of technologies in migration, or other areas relevant to the candidate's expertise and interests.

About the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S)

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S) is a cross-disciplinary and national research centre, which aims to create the knowledge and strategies necessary for responsible, ethical, and inclusive automated decision-making. Funded by the Australian Research Council from 2020 to mid-2027, ADM+S is hosted at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, with nodes at seven other Australian universities (Monash University, University of Melbourne, University of Queensland, QUT, Swinburne University, University of Sydney and University of New South Wales).

The Centre brings together leading researchers in the humanities, social and technological sciences in an international industry, research and civil society network. Its priority domains for public engagement are news and media, transport, social services, and health. The Centre of Excellence for ADM+S has four Research Programs: Data, Institutions, Machines and People and four Focus Areas: Digital Health, Mobility and Transport, News and Information, and Social Services.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • conduct and manage primary ethnographic research in the Asia-Pacific region on linguistic and cultural diversity in ADM in collaboration with the Chief Investigator Heather Horst, Professor of Design Anthropology
  • prepare research documentation independently, including ethics applications and reports, reports of research findings, presentations, funding proposals, and other dissemination materials
  • analyse and communicate findings with team members involved in the signature project in the Centre of Excellence and beyond
  • submit research for publication or dissemination in a range of outlets, including high-quality outlets, as author and co-author
  • actively participate in the life of the Centre of Excellence, including ECR and HDR research training programs in the Centre.

About you

  • doctorate in a relevant discipline area (e.g., Anthropology, Culture and Communication, Design, Human Geography, and cognate disciplines) awarded in the past five years (not including of carers and other forms of leave)
  • demonstrated experience in conducting ethnographic fieldwork and/or sustained research in particular communities, organisations, countries or regions
  • demonstrated linguistic expertise in line with proposed research project(s) in the Asia-Pacific region;
  • proven scholarly writing skills and experience in preparing publications for a variety of audiences, including scholarly articles in high-quality refereed journals, book chapters, and/or books and/or experience in using creative methods in research, analysis or dissemination
  • demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders and research collaborators, including presentations at academic conferences, industry events and/or in the media
  • demonstrated experience and specialised knowledge in all facets of research project management including project design and project management with firm deadlines.
