Introduce:

The School of Life Sciences at Chongqing University was established in July 2012, formed through the integration of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (founded in late 2007) and the Gene Engineering Research Center, which was originally part of the College of Bioengineering. The school aims to “research life sciences, cultivate top talents, and serve human health,” with the vision of becoming “a research-oriented institution with international standards and distinctive characteristics.” In recent years, the school has been dedicated to meeting market demands, targeting global cutting-edge research, and addressing critical needs for national and regional economic development. It has continually refined the academic disciplines, clarified the talent cultivation objectives, emphasized quality over quantity, focused on key areas, and driven reforms and innovations. By working together and overcoming challenges, it aims to establish a research-oriented college with unique characteristics and an internationalized talent cultivation model.

The School of Life Sciences offers a first-level doctoral degree program in Biology and a postdoctoral research station. It is also a key discipline in biology in Chongqing. The school is home to several specialized platforms, including the National Microbial Pesticide Engineering Research Center (Chongqing Branch), the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs’ Ecological Environment Safety Supervision and Testing Center for Crops (Chongqing), the Chongqing Key Laboratory of Plant Hormone Regulation and Molecular Breeding, the Chongqing Insecticidal Fungal Pesticide Engineering Technology Research Center, and the Chongqing Key Laboratory of Functional Genes and Regulatory Technologies. The total value of its instrumentation and equipment exceeds 30 million yuan. The school is located in the Science Building at the Huxi Campus of Chongqing University, with teaching and experimental facilities covering 4,500 square meters. It has invested more than 5 million yuan in the construction of a “Plant Experimental Base” (which includes an intelligent greenhouse of over 1,100 square meters and a net room of 1,600 square meters), as well as undergraduate laboratories. The school boasts a distinguished faculty, including one member of the European Academy of Sciences, three distinguished professors, 14 full professors (including four national-level young talents, 10 provincial and ministerial-level talents, and five experts under the “100 Talents Program”), and 13 associate professors. The school also employs 10 managerial and technical staff, as well as 10 postdoctoral researchers and young faculty. All full-time faculty hold doctoral degrees, with over 90% having studied or worked abroad for over a year. The school currently has 121 graduate students (including 62 PhD students and 59 Master's students) and 102 undergraduates.

In recent years, the school has undertaken over 100 national and provincial research projects, including the National "973" and "863" Programs, the National Key R&D Program, the National Natural Science Foundation, and Ministry of Science and Technology international cooperation projects, with total research funding exceeding 90 million yuan. As the first author institution, the faculty has published 238 SCI papers, many of which have appeared in world-renowned journals in biology, such as Cell Host & Microbe, Molecular Cell, Cell Metabolism, Science Advances, Nature Plants, and Nature Communications. The school has also been granted 16 patents and published five textbooks and monographs.
