Introduce:

The School of Journalism and Communication at Chongqing University has developed a talent cultivation system that integrates undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral levels. In 2004, the school was authorized to offer master’s degrees in three sub-disciplines: Journalism, Communication, and Broadcasting and Television Arts. In 2006, it was granted the authority to offer a master’s degree in Journalism and Communication. In 2010, the school was approved to offer a master’s professional degree in Journalism and Communication. In 2013, it established its own “Journalism Law” academic direction under the first-level doctoral program in Law. In 2018, the scool set up the academic direction of “Social Governance and Public Communication” under the first-level doctoral program in Public Administration. In 2019, the school was approved for a first-level doctoral program in Journalism and Communication. In the same year, the “Journalism and Communication First-Level Discipline Enhancement Program” was included in Chongqing University’s “Double First-Class” discipline construction project. In 2023, it became the first university in Chongqing to establish a postdoctoral research station in Journalism and Communication.

The school is well-resourced with distinctive characteristics in talent training. It has received joint support from the Chongqing Municipal Party Committee’s Publicity Department and has co-established the Public Opinion Research Institute with the university’s Party Committee’s Publicity Department. In 2015, the Journalism program was designated as a distinctive program in Chongqing, and was included in the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Finance’s “Higher Education Comprehensive Reform Pilot” project for Journalism and the “Excellence Plan.” In 2016, the school became one of 18 news institutions designated by the All-China Journalists Association for submitting candidates for the China Journalism Awards. In 2017, Journalism and Communication became a key discipline in Chongqing, and the Journalism and Film Arts Professional Group (jointly applied with the School of Film) was approved as a distinctive academic professional group in Chongqing. In 2018, the “Disaster Event Integrated Reporting Virtual Simulation Experiment” was approved as a national virtual simulation teaching project by the Ministry of Education. In 2019, Journalism was selected as a “First-Class Undergraduate Program” construction project by the Ministry of Education. In 2020, the Journalism and Communication Innovation Team was approved as a Collaborative Innovation Research Team by Chongqing's universities. In 2021, Broadcasting and Television Journalism was selected as a “First-Class Undergraduate Program” by the Ministry of Education, achieving full coverage of national first-class programs. In 2022, the discipline was recognized as a key discipline for “Intelligent+ Development” in Chongqing. In 2024, the Intelligent Communication and International Promotion Laboratory was approved as one of the first batch of Chongqing’s key social sciences laboratories. The Institute of Publishing Science was also approved as a national publishing think tank by the National Press and Publication Administration. According to Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, the school’s Journalism and Communication discipline ranked 21st nationally in 2024, in the top 17%. In the Ministry of Education’s Fifth Discipline Evaluation, the discipline achieved a cross-level upgrade, ranking among the top in the western region.
