AUT's dynamic School of Engineering and Computer and Mathematical Sciences (ECMS) is crucial to the future of New Zealand. With approximately 175 deeply committed staff and nearly 3,000 (EFTS) students, we are a large, complex School and one of AUT's biggest. We develop ambition, capabilities, knowledge and passion in Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences practice, and form an important part of AUT's transdisciplinary Faculty of Design and Creative TechnologiesFaculty/Te Ara Auaha). Our disciplines are growing, our departments are world ranked, we're research intensive and have a strong transnational education footprint. Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We are seeking an innovative senior academic to combine their academic leadership expertise with disciplinary expertise, as our new Deputy Head of School. The School of ECMS is in a strong position and we're looking for an experienced academic leader to help us continue the great progress made, whilst embracing space for your own innovative thinking. We're a diverse School and you'll be comfortable communicating with groups from different disciplines.

In this exciting role you will work closely with the Head of School across priorities, as we tackle industry and community challenges with a trans-disciplinary lens. You will also utilise your partnership-driven people leadership skills to contribute significantly to the school's research and teaching activities - while also playing a vital role in developing and implementing the school's strategic goals and supporting our people leaders with staff management.

Key focus areas include:

  • Support the Head of School to execute School strategy provide staff management support and guidance to our people leaders.
  • Embrace AUT's Te Aronui framework. Support staff as the School and AUT works towards becoming a Te Tiriti o Waitangi-led organisation.
  • Help lead the uplift of the School's research profile and outputs. Help foster excellence and support in teaching, scholarship, and collaboration across the School and research centres. Support future curriculum development, external engagement, oversight of accreditation processes (and more!) as directed by the Head of School.
  • Work with relevant key staff to improve various subject rankings.
  • Become a key contributor to a School culture focused on excellence, innovation and equity in teaching and learning, service, industry and community outreach, and other academic contributions.

Along with your full academic CV (including a full list of publications), please submit a) a cover letter explaining why this particular role (and AUT) is of interest, and b) a statement addressing how your experience aligns with the key selection criteria we're seeking below:

  1. A record of academic achievement suitable for appointment as a professor/associate professor (preferably) or a senior lecturer (with very high leadership experience). Please highlight relevant interdisciplinary contributions.
  2. Disciplinary expertise within an existing area of our School of Engineering and Computer and Mathematical Sciences. Please also highlight your experience working successfully across other disciplines.
  3. Proven significant academic leadership experience. Please highlight key contributions such as, for example: running a research centre, leadership at departmental/discipline levels, high-level innovative pedagogy and curriculum development etc.
  4. A champion for equity. Capability to lead and support the School on its Te Tiriti journey.
  5. A brief summary of your interest and experience embracing innovation.
  6. Demonstrated ability to develop significant connections and partnerships with industry, community and other key stakeholders. 
  7. Experience leading strategic change and demonstrating excellent understanding of cultural, operational, and organisational change management.

Further Information:

  • Start Date: Mid-2025 (to be agreed with the appointee).
  • Term: The successful candidate will secure a 3-year secondment as Deputy Head of School (with potential for further extension) and a permanent substantive appointment as a senior academic.
  • Salary: Commensurate with relevant experience and skills and aligned with the appropriate step in AUT's academic pay scales, all NZD (Professor range: $162,608-$209,052; Associate Professor range: $148,548-$171,983; Senior Lecturer: $113,413 -$148,295). An Associate Professor or Senior Lecturer also receives a special responsibilities allowance for the role of Deputy Head of School.
