Your personal sphere of play:

This temporary position is at the University of Vienna’s Department of Demography (Faculty of Social Sciences), which is part of the Wittgenstein Centre – a leading global institution in human capital analysis and population research. You will join a dynamic research environment with over 60 scientists representing more than 20 countries and a diverse array of disciplines in the social sciences.
The Department of Demography is looking for a postdoctoral researcher with good knowledge of demography and/or closely related disciplines for a duration of 4 months as a parental leave replacement. The postdoctoral researcher would have to work on a topic relevant to the Department of Demography, including mortality and health, fertility and family formation or migration– A particular interest in human capital as a dimension in the study of these topics, would also be desirable.

Your future tasks:

Active participation in research & administration, which means:

  • Developing and strengthening the independent research profile
  • Involvement in research projects / research studies
  • International publications and presentations
  • Supervision of students
  • Involvement in the department administration and in research administration
  • You conduct high-quality research with societal impact that is publishable in top international journals
  • You collaborate with a dynamic team of demographic experts
  • The position does not entail teaching obligations

  • You completed a PhD in Economics, Demography, Quantitative Sociology, Social Statistics, Human Geography or a related discipline with a focus on quantitative methods (or are in the process of completing it).
  • You possess excellent skills in your specialization.
  • You are interested in one or more of the following fields and topics: mortality and health, fertility and family formation, migration, population projections, population analysis.
  • You have proven experience working with microdata.
  • You excel in using statistical software, such as Stata or R.
  • You have demonstrated your capacity to conduct original and rigorous research independently, and to prepare excellent publications.
  • You have publications in renowned, subject-relevant publication outlets (peer-reviewed, depending on the professional standards)
  • You are proficient in English (knowledge of German is not a requirement).
