Who we are
Great minds. Innovative solutions.
Be part of a vibrant community that celebrates over 200 years of academic excellence, world-class research, and impactful innovation. Located in the dynamic Bahrain Bay, the University of Strathclyde, Bahrain, offers the same high standards of academic excellence and pioneering research that our Glasgow, UK campus is renowned for.
We currently provide eight undergraduate programs in Engineering, Science, and Business, with future phases set to expand our offerings in research and innovation. As a leading international technological university, our mission, inspired by our founding principle as ‘a place of useful learning,’ is to make a positive difference in the lives of our students, society, and the world.
Since 1995, we have been delivering MBA teaching at our international centre in Bahrain. Now, in partnership with S Eleven Educational, we are proud to expand our activities to create an Innovation, Research, and Education Hub.
Our department
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) is one of the largest and most successful civil engineering departments in the UK. The department is ranked 1st in Scotland and 3rd in the UK in the Guardian Subject Rankings 2025. We have over 600 students, including 450 undergraduates, 100 taught postgraduates and almost 100 registered research students. We have a strong commitment to widening access and inclusion while maintaining academic quality and providing an outstanding student experience.
Civil and Environmental Engineering academics lead an active and growing portfolio of around £20M worth of research projects, the main funders of this research are UK Research and Innovation (£13.9M), National Institute for Health and Care Research (£3M) and Industry (£1.8M). We are a dynamic research-intensive department. Income from industry funded research has increased year on year and income from licensing, gains on sales of spinout/spin off investment, and consultancy has doubled over the last four years. We have 30 academic staff, 22 post-doctoral research staff and 66 PGR students.
The opportunity
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), University of Strathclyde, is seeking to appoint a Teaching Fellow/Lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering to undertake teaching and assessment in the BEng Civil Engineering at the University of Strathclyde, Bahrain Campus, as well as engage in internationally leading research in soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering.
The successful candidate will join our Centre for Ground Engineering and Energy Geosciences (GEEG), which currently lead £9.7M of UKRI funded research projects. The GEEG Centre has three key research areas, i) the development of novel, low cost, low carbon grouts for application in ground engineering, oil & gas and nuclear decommissioning & containment, ii) the development of nature-based technologies for geotechnical infrastructure including the potential application of saprotrophic fungi to stabilise soil slopes and suction-based low carbon technologies, e.g. via engineered vegetated interfaces, and iii) energy geosciences, including rock behaviour in response to hydraulic pulses for resource extraction, waste disposal and energy storage applications. Other research areas include storage integrity for CO2 and hydrogen geological storage, use of micro-seismics to inform siting and construction of subsurface infrastructure, and foundation design for offshore wind turbines.
The University of Strathclyde, Bahrain is a socially progressive institution that strives to ensure equality of opportunity and celebrates the diversity of its student and staff community. Strathclyde is people-oriented and collaborative, offering supportive and flexible working culture with a deep commitment to our equality and diversity.
