Your personal sphere of play:

We invite applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in the Biochemical Network Analysis group, led by Jürgen Zanghellini. Our team applies mathematical modeling, high-performance computing, and data science to study cellular functions. Known for our work in constraint-based modeling of microbial metabolism, we also engage in applied research with a focus on biotechnology.

This position will focus on computational modeling of fungal-bacterial interactions and their potential implications for human health — an exciting and emerging area of research.

This position is limited until 31.01.2028.

Your future tasks:

We are seeking an ambitious, early-career researcher passionate about multidisciplinary science. As part of our team, you will participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:

  • Pioneer Research: Develop an independent research profile that complements the group’s activities
  • Collaborate Actively: Participate in collaborative projects with academic and industry partners
  • Secure Funding: Contribute to project proposals and secure third-party funding
  • Publish and Present: Share your research through publications in top-tier journals and presentations at leading conferences
  • Teach and Mentor: Deliver independently teaching activities as per institutional requirements of the collective bargaining agreement and supervise students
  • Drive Quality: Engage in performance evaluation and quality assurance initiatives and take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration

Your profile:

We are looking for someone with:

Minimum Requirements

  • PhD/Doctorate in (computational) systems biology, bioinformatics, data science, mathematics, or related disciplines
  • Experience in a high-performance computing environment
  • Strong programming skills (preferably Python and R)
  • Proven ability to publish in leading international journals
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken)

Desirable Expertise

Experience with:

  • Constraint-based methods, especially in:

    • Microbial network reconstruction
    • Genome-scale metabolic modeling
    • Resource allocation methods
  • NGS or third-generation sequencing data, including:

    • Genomics
    • Metagenomics
    • Transcriptomics
  • Machine learning algorithms for analyzing biological data
  • Teaching and e-learning methodologies
  • Collaborative projects between academia and industry
