The Governing Body of Balliol College, Oxford seeks to elect a new Master with effect from 1 July 2026, or no later than 1 October 2026, to succeed Dame Helen Ghosh DCB.
One of the most distinguished and international of the Oxford colleges, Balliol is home to 70 Fellows, over 800 students, with nearly equal numbers of undergraduates and postgraduates, representing, typically, at least 50 nationalities at any time; and it employs over 150 staff. Our community of Old Members numbers more than 8,500 based around the world.
The College’s reputation as an inclusive and meritocratic institution, and its crucial role in developing the Oxford tutorial system, is extended today by continued efforts to broaden access to its education through an active programme of outreach initiatives, and a generous and growing provision of bursaries and scholarships.
The Master will be an inspiring and supportive figure, presiding over this thriving, international and diverse academic community. They will have a substantial personal record of achievement and a robust commitment to the values of teaching, research, and intellectual excellence.
They will have effective chairing skills, a consensual and inclusive style, and the capacity to work with the Fellowship to design a strategic vision for the College’s future. They will have oversight of all the College’s operational and financial resources in bringing the whole College community together in order to deliver on that vision. They will be able effectively to promote and protect the College’s interests and studies with a range of internal and external audiences.
Candidates are welcome from all professional fields, and the College is keen to encourage applications from women and under-represented groups.
Closing Date Monday 20th January 2025.
