The University of Southampton is committed to excellence in all we do, applying our insights and inventiveness to solve the most complex societal and environmental challenges. As a world-leading, research-intensive university, with a strong and high-quality educational offering, we are renowned for our innovation and enterprise and are within the top 1% of universities worldwide.

Careers, Employability and Student Enterprise is an essential part of the University, responsible for supporting our student and graduates to plan their future career paths and develop essential enterprising skills. It is an exciting time to join the team as we work to achieve the goals of the Employability Action Plan set out in the University’s Employability strategy. This has included investment in a state-of-the-art mobile careers centre, the expansion from 35 to 55 members of staff, and the upcoming launch of our Successful Futures skills pathway.

As a Careers Consultant (Professional Development) your role will be to support and mentor newly qualified Careers Consultants and those who are in the process of completing their professional guidance qualification. You will work closely with the Careers, Employability and Student Enterprise (CESE) management team to identify training gaps, areas for cross-service training and encourage the sharing of best practice. In addition, you will create and maintain a continuing professional development record for all CESE staff to ensure codes of practice are met, training records are maintained and ensure support is provided to members of staff going through training and/or qualifications.

Alongside your role as Careers Consultant (Professional Development) you will provide careers guidance to our students and tailored career coaching to Graduates as part of our Graduate Calling Campaign aimed to deliver intensive support to first-degree graduates for the first 15 months after graduation.

To apply for this role, you will be required to possess a recognised professional qualification in careers guidance and significant experience in careers guidance delivery. You will have a detailed understanding of the current challenges faced by students in Higher Education and you will be up to date with developments in the graduate labour market. The ideal candidate will also have a good understanding of the AGCAS Professional Pathways and the routes to professional qualification in careers guidance. You will ideally have experience of coaching staff and students and be an advocate for the role of mentoring and peer review in staff development.

As an employer, we are committed to supporting our staff and students and we are open to a flexible and hybrid working approach with a minimum of 3 days based at our Southampton campus.

As well as additional benefits that will make your life easier, such as a generous holiday allowance and additional university closure days, we will support your long-term future too, with access to the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), subsidised health and fitness facilities and a range of discounts. We believe equality, diversity and inclusion are fundamental to making the University of Southampton a welcoming, vibrant, and successful organisation. Having a diverse workforce, inclusive of people of all ages and beliefs, from different racial, educational, and social backgrounds opens up a wealth of possibilities, makes us more creative and accelerates our impact on society. We welcome applicants that value the diversity of our community and are willing to play their part in supporting the mission of inclusivity.
