About ANU and School of Computing

The ANU by 2025 Strategic Plan calls for the University to serve society through transformational research and education. As one of the great universities of the world, ANU is driven by a culture of excellence in everything we do. Our lived experience is increasingly one of large-scale systems of people, whose actions and interactions are influenced by our digital, physical and biological environment. The School of Computing in the ANU College of Engineering, Computing and Cybernetics (CECC) has a strong foundation in computing and information sciences at ANU. We are a transformative centre for research in artificial intelligence and machine learning, computer systems and software, and theoretical foundations of computing. We span traditional and modern thinking, connecting decades of computer science methodologies with modern data and computational science. Our mission is motivated by the need to design, drive and sustain strategic activities via five broad focus areas: Computing Foundations, Computational Science, Intelligent Systems, Data Science and Analytics, and the Software Innovation Institute.

About the opportunity

We invite two new Postdoctoral / Research Fellows to join a CSIRO/ANU/UNSW project on artificial intelligence for health, safety and environmental objectives. The Research Fellow appointments will be two years fixed term. The research project connects with the research strengths in the school on artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and vision, natural language understanding, and robotics. The intended project also collaborates with other requisite disciplines to integrate human and social values in AI systems, touching on aspects of philosophy, cognition, ethics, and safety.

This appointment will focus on interpretable machine learning for data summarisation, with applications in climate change, health and environment. Competitive applicants in this stream are expected to have in-depth knowledge in at least one of the following areas: machine learning algorithms, human-centered machine learning, natural language and text processing. The intended research will involve algorithm design, formulating and solving human-centered machine learning problems, and connecting algorithmic innovation to application domains.  The research fellow is expected to work with a team led by Prof Lexing Xie, Prof Jing Jiang and Dr Thang Bui.

The intended research will have a mix of theoretical and empirical components. We invite researchers with diverse skill sets and research methodologies to apply.

We are looking for strong team players with excellent interpersonal skills and the capacity to quickly develop productive and professional relationships with colleagues. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with talented PhD, master and undergraduate students in the School of Computing. Appointees will also have opportunities to gain teaching experience, in a way that is aligned with their career development and project settings.
