ABOUT THE ROLE

Northumbria University in Newcastle is inviting applications for a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow position in ocean and ice-sheet modelling. The position is fully funded for 18 months. Candidates will undertake leading research in the field of climate change, with a focus on the evolution of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and Southern Ocean between present-day and 2300. We invite candidates with interests and experience in the fields of physical and computational oceanography and glaciology. You will be able to develop your research portfolio across a broad range of topics, depending on your specialism and interests. The main research objective of the project is to advance an existing coupled ice sheet-ocean configuration of the Weddell Sea in East Antarctica, and perform numerical simulations to estimate future freshwater fluxes and sea level rise contributions from the ice sheet for a range of future climate change scenarios. Advanced stochastic methods will be applied to validate and optimise the ice-sheet model using modern-day satellite data, and to quantify forecast uncertainties.

ABOUT THE TEAM

The successful candidates will be part of the Northumbria University peak of excellence 'The Future of Ice on Earth', and will be based in the Department of Geography & Environmental Sciences at Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK. The department is ranked 2nd in the UK for research power in Geography and Environmental Studies, with over 90% of our research outputs, and 100% of our research impact rated as world-leading or internationally excellent (UK Research Excellence Framework, 2021).

Candidates will work closely with Associate Professor J. De Rydt, and become part of a growing team of experts in ice-ocean interactions at Northumbria. The PDRA post is jointly funded by UKRI's Future Leaders Fellowship programme (grant reference MR/W011816/1) and Work package 4 of the Horizon Europe project OCEAN:ICE (grant agreement nr 101060452), which involve links to several leading research institutes in the UK, Europe and US. Candidates will have the opportunity to work and interact with other research groups worldwide, and be absorbed into a diverse and vibrant research community tackling important questions in climate change.

ABOUT YOU

Successful candidates will have a PhD in either Physics or Mathematics, or in a related discipline such as Physical Oceanography, Geophysics or Earth Sciences, and have demonstrable specialist expert knowledge in numerical modelling. The starting date of the post is flexible, but ideally commence in spring 2025.
